Today, I was talking to a friend, who always seem to manage to help me develop a post out of our conversations. We were talking about career paths and what not, and how we ended up working where we are now.
For some strange reason, I delved into the different careers/jobs that I wanted to occupy as a kid, kind of like a, “When I grow up, I want to be a…” timeline, including justifications for why I abandoned or changed my mind as I grew into different stages of life. Here is how it went:
1. Circa 5-6 years old, pre-grade school: I told my mom(or my grandma) while wasting a whole, long bar of laundry soap,”When I grow up, I want to be a labandera (nanny, clothes washer, housekeeper)”. This was frowned upon, so I moved on to bigger dreams, not to mention, I had just destroyed a whole long bar of soap.(if you are an old school Filipino, you know what I am talking about, if not I apologize).
2. Circa grade school years: While setting up and playing with an office desk with a name bar, running some random business, “When I grow up, I want to be an office boss”. Not quite sure why I deterred from this goal, but it might have had something to do with my attention span not holding up while sitting behind a desk. On to more ambitious goals.
3. Circa middle school years: After winning a couple of science fairs and becoming obsessed with Star trek ,”When I grow up, I want to be an Astronaut”. Then, I found out what astronauts had to go through to be able to get to space. So, I scaled down a bit.
4. Circa high school years: I became fascinated with the law (via episodes of Matlock), government, and injustice, and going through normal teenage pangs, “When I grow up, I want to become a lawyer”. Then, I saw Devil’s Advocate and I didn’t want to sell my soul to the Devil to be a successful lawyer. Kidding! My parents decided law school would take a gazillion years, so they told me to be a nurse instead. I said, no, and I ended up going to nursing school, anyway, albeit, the shortest program that I could find, HA! HA!
Today, I am working in the pharmaceutical research industry, and I love it, go figure, but, “When I grow up, I want to be a Political Science professor”. So I can influence future law makers, I’m kidding.
Anyways, a gazillion years and 2 degrees later, I’m still growing up, but I think I’m in a good spot and that much closer to attaining my life long dreams, that was recently set, like 7 years ago 🙂

Here I am before all of the above for Throwback Thursday:
