Memorial Monday 2014

USFlag

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day. It is nice to be able to take the time to remember and celebrate those who fight/fought for our freedom. I am proud to have family members who were/are part of the service.

I heard that it was raining cats and dogs in Houston yesterday, so you stay safe H-town. We had some drizzles here and there, but the sun came out just enough and in time to enjoy some awesome burgers and drinks with new friends and neighbors, sans kids. (Naturally, we provided the potations. I concocted some sangria and my version of, Summer Beer II, see below). What did y’all do for Memorial Day 2014?

Here is my version: (Pitcher size serving)

18oz vodka(I used Kettle One)

12oz Apple Raspberry juice mix

12oz Beer (I used Boulevard’s Tasting Room Ginger-Lemon Radler)

12oz water

1 whole grapefruit, cut into wheels

Mix all wet ingredients in a nice size pitcher and stir well. Add grapefruit wheels into the drink, serve very cold, and ENJOY.

Week 35: Finally, Friday!!

20140511-110145.jpg

Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! Here is a late Friday post.

Highlights:

Last weekend, we went to the Brookside Art Annual and also checked out a couple of places we have been meaning to visit, Foo’s Frozen Custard and the Reading Reptile. The girls loved the Reading Reptile, it’s now the coolest bookstore ever, said Xavi. More on this place later. And then we decided to have a random Cinco de Mayo BBQ at the park with friends.

*Apparently there is not a flavor that they do not have at Foo’s.*

The big girls are gearing up for end of school year activities such as finals testing and field day. This year went by so fast, I can’t believe that the school year is over in two weeks. Xavi finally finished make-up testing and she is too relieved.

I went to the girls’ Book Fair with them at school because some kids were stealing books, so parental supervision was required. Kids stealing book. Really. They were having a buy one, get one free sale and apparently it was a must.

20140511-110317.jpg

Xavi has picked up her reading time quite a bit, maybe she is prepping for when she get her eye glasses. She tells me that she likes fantasy and magic books a lot. She was too excited when we picked out her eyeglasses this week and she couldn’t understand why she had to wait 2 weeks to take them home.

Aspen:

Aspen has a new phrase that is gonna get her in trouble more often than not: “I was talking to Daddy not you Mommy”….Excuse me?

She uses this phrase a lot when she wants something and I or someone else tells her no.

Also, she told me that she is going to be Aspen the First like Sophia the First. So she said that she will need a pink crown with a pink dress with pink stripes. Eww and Gross, says me. Pink. I told her, her dad will make it happen.

Her birthday is slowly creeping up, so I have started asking her what she wants for her birthday party and these seem to be the constant requests: A pink Bubble Guppies pinata and pink balloons and pink cake and Lightning McQueen and Frozen and Woody plates….? And a plate for Bambi(her current favorite stuffed animal deer)

I will have to narrow it down later.

Easter 2014!!

20140421-001256.jpg

I hope everyone had a blessed and awesome Easter. I also hope everyone had the opportunity to appreciate the reason for the celebration: HE IS RISEN. This year, we enjoyed a nice dinner(Xavier grilled, as per usual) and missed family a little bit. Our families usually have a big family dinner after Easter service, so we missed that this weekend.

But all is well 🙂 We were invited by my friend, Lauren, to her church’s Easter Festival and we had a great time. Aspen and Xavi had a blast egg hunting and playing with Cole and Aidan, and enjoying all of the bounce houses. Cute moment of the day was when Cole helped Aspen find her eggs, they made a great team 🙂 The church grounds had the greenest grass and the weather was just beautiful. It was buzzing with activities and there so many people. And I had the darnest time trying to make sure Aspen stayed in line for all of the activities. Thanks again, Lauren, for inviting us, we had a great time! Here are a few photos 🙂

Week 32: Finally, Friday!!

20140420-222650.jpg

Happy Easter Weekend! I hope everyone gets a chance to appreciate the importance of this celebration. This week went by a little too slow, but still thankful, especially when you realize how close tragedy can hit. For those who have not had the chance to hear about the Jewish Community Center shooting last Sunday, that center is literally 2 minutes from the building where I go to work every morning. It is so close that when they held the memorial service this past Thursday, there was extra security around our parking lot to ensure safety. But more on this later on another post.

20140420-224040.jpg

Highlights:

Jaelan had her Talent Show tryout this week and she made it. She sang a Leona Lewis song. One of her favorite artists. She also her final honor choir concert this week. She was pretty sick, but made it through. She has really enjoyed choir this year and is very excited to go on to the middle school level.

20140420-223015.jpg

Xavi had her state exams this week. She missed one of them because she had a tummy ache, and had to go home early, but she was able to make it up the next day. Silly Xavi.

Also, today is Xavier and I’s 12th wedding anniversary 🙂

20140420-222914.jpg

Aspen:

Oh, Aspen, here she is, having a break down at the park 🙂

She is excited about going Easter egg hunting later this morning with her Xavi and her friend. One of the things I like about Aspen right now is that she thinks that everyone she meets is her new best friend. She also thinks that everyone who has the same name as her friends are also her best friends, she is funny. Example:

She overhears a lady call her son Aidan. Aspen happens to have a friend named Aidan.

Aspen: Oh, he’s Aidan? Aidan is my best friend, he(she point to the stranger Aidan) is my best friend!

Me; No, Aspen, that’s a different Aidan, he is not your best friend.

Aspen: No, mama, you silly, Aidan is my best friend.

Me: Yes, but, not that Aidan. We don’t know this Aidan, that Aidan is a stranger danger Aidan.

Aspen: Mama, no, Aidan is my best friend. You funny, mama!

You can see where that conversation was going. But I think she got it for the most part. I think it’s cute that kids think that anyone can be their best friend. If they only knew 🙂

Let’s Skate!

20131120-073846.jpg

Xavi had a birthday this past weekend and to celebrate, we took her and a couple of her friends skating at Skate City. Having kid birthdays in the dead of winter, ok not really the dead of winter, but it’s too cold for outdoor activities, leaves me with only a handful of choices for birthday party ideas. If you have any, please share them!

We have literally exhausted Skyzone, a trampoline park, the last 2 or 4 birthdays, and ice skating was the option before we discovered Skyzone, so we decided to go with the skating rink. Xavi doesn’t know too many kids here yet, so we decided against a birthday package. They skated their hearts out to loud music, ate pizza and funnel, and drank blue flavored icees. They had a great time, legs were hurting the next day, and the birthday girl was happy, satisfied, and grateful! All, before she received the ultimate gifts, the Pokemon X game from us and from her Tita Dora, the 3D DS that she had been talking to GOD about. Yes, she has.

Here are a few photos from Xavi’s birthday:

Week 6: Finally, Friday!!

Happy FRIDAY!! Very glad it’s the weekend. It was a busy week at work and it was cold ALL week and it’s only OCTOBER! It is too early to be this cold! I hope this is fake cold weather and it goes away until December.SIGH. I can hope.

Week 6 Highlights:

Aspen:

Her vocabulary, while fairly advanced for her age, is still primitive when it comes to more difficult words, like spaghetti. This week, her word for spaghetti is a little closer to the actual word:

Before this week: spaghetti/noodles = yew

This week: spaghetti = comegettis.

Progress is awesome 🙂

On Tuesday, I snuck up on her when she was unbelievably quiet in our room, and this is what the big girls and I found:

20131018-230506.jpg

20131018-230520.jpg

It’s Friday, and after 3 days of washing her hair, it’s still GREASY.

Jaelan and Xavi:

Jaelan and I got ourselves matching boots this week, HERS is a size 7 in women’s and mine is a 6.5 in girls. How did this happen?

One of the girls revealed to me that, one time, when their armpit smelled like garlic or onion, they tried to lick it to see if it taste like garlic or onion, they succeeded. I was speechless. GROSS. Can you guess which one?

I went to my room and LAUGHED and LAUGHED, silently, then I went back down and lectured about not licking armpits cause of gross germs and such. I can’t make this up.

Convo with one of them:

Me: What is an iambic pentameter?

Response: (And confidently, might I add), It is the sound the refrigerator makes in the middle of the night. *Walks away before I can correct her*.

Me: Huh? What? SIGH.

I am slightly concerned, but they brought home all A’s this week, so, I am good for now.

PS: Jaelan said that there’s a boy in her class named James(changed), but he calls himself, Tina. Why?

I need answers to these questions.

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND!! 🙂

Where’s the Titty!?

Don’t be alarmed by the title, I have not started to breastfeed the toddler. Rather, as mentioned on the previous Friday post, we got a new family pet: a grey and white kitten, I don’t like cats, so I have no idea what kind it is. I just know it’s a baby cat. The girls call it Nectar and Xavier calls it Viper, so the cat’s name is Nectar Viper, i know, fierce! Aspen refuses to call it anything, except, “Titty”(kitty), hence the title, or “Tat” (cat).

Xavier, the girls, and even Jax, LOVE the kitty, and of course I don’t like it. I was scratched up by a big, fat cat when I was little, so I don’t like them. But, Xavier loves animals and it looks like he has passed that on to the girls, so we get to have a cat. I also believe, despite my dislike for critters, that it’s important for kids to have a pet cause it teaches them a lot of stuff, like to value life and such, responsibility, discipline, and that if they don’t exercise these values, the kitty will die (or you know get taken to a shelter). I’m just being honest. But so far, they have been doing an awesome job with it, so it looks like it will live to maturity (let us pray). They have already parted ways with a beta and 2 crab class pets that we adopted, so their track record is very suspect.

20130924-111721.jpg

This is titty, Nectar Viper, hiding behind my succulent.

Aspen on the other hand is not convinced. She likes it from afar. When she get home from day care, she will call out, “Where is the titty!?” or “Come here tat!! Come here!”. And when the titty shows up and runs toward her, Aspen runs the other way screaming and tells the titty,”Back up, tat! Back up!” She will pet it every once in a while when one of us (meaning Xavier or her sisters) holds it up for her. So, I guess she is on my side. SIGH.

P.S: I am not adding the titty to the About section until she makes it for real.

Running Challenge: Across the Pond

Week 1 of 4

Today is the first day of fall. YAY! I don’t exactly know who gets to decide when Summer ends and Fall begins, but I am glad it is here. Three things I like about fall are: football, fitness(running), and festivals. Not necessarily in that order. Fall weather is awesome for running events, cause less people are prone to falling out from the heat, so that means all of the awesome running events happen in the Fall. This year, I’ll be missing a few staple runs, but, I will get to do some new runs in a different city.

After taking a short hiatus from running back in May, due to a health issue(allergies, lots of hives and itching), I started back up, and have been running again for about 2 months now. I am running 5 days a week, and have gotten up to 20 miles a week. The goal is to run the Kansas City Half Marathon, and get back into running events. I’ve only ran one half marathon, 2013 Aramco Houston Half Marathon, and I did ok (2:45) for not training properly or at all. (Don’t judge my time I have only been running since October 2011, and quite frankly, 16 year old me would probably die at all of this running that I am doing. So, hush!)

Since I started running again, I decided to switch from the Runkeeper app to the Nike+ app, and discovered an awesome feature: You can create running challenges and invite friends to participate. As such, in my attempt to train my body to run longer and farther, I’ve challenged myself to add a mile here and there every week until the run on October 19. This week’s challenge was accepted by my cousin, all the way from the motherland, the Philippines. So, not only do I get try to see if I can run 25 miles this week, which I have never done before, but I get to do it with friends and/or family who lives across the world. YAY!! If you want to join me in my quest, feel free to let me know and I will extend the challenge to you! YAY! So, wish me luck and I will TRY to update my weekly mileage to see if I meet each challenges and shave time off of my half marathon time!!

20130922-203806.jpg

Sidenote: I am also hoping to get Jaelan to start running with me, because of my fear of fat(TM) for her. She started running today. Another YAY!
