Week 44: Finally, Friday!!

20140713-234800.jpg

Happy end of the weekend! Here is late Friday post. I hope you had a great weekend. Congratulations to Germany for winning the World Cup, as I had predicted(on my bracket). But, the Rockets are not having a good week in the free agency world. So, hopefully the coming weeks will be better. I really, really, really doubt that Trevor Ariza will make a significant (or any) difference for us. So, find someone else, anyone else.

Highlights:

20140713-234426.jpg

It was a pretty uneventful week. We beat the heat this week, by going to a friend’s pool. This month, we are having Summer Games at work. I played in the Dodge Ball tournament. We won one and lost one. The winners were insane, I would have lost a limb as hard as they were throwing those soft ass balls. This week, I am doing the Free Throw contest, wish me luck. And Xavier and I finally got to check out Barrel 31. They have a great Happy Hour.

20140713-234753.jpg

Xavier took us to a huge park last weekend. I can say this about Kansas: They know how to do parks. Shawnee Mission Park is huge and full of activities.

20140713-234519.jpg

Aspen received a kite for her birthday, and she has been wanting to fly it, so we decided to have a picnic and fly kites at Shawnee Mission last weekend. I do not remember kite flying being so difficult when I was younger. I mean it took me, 3 tries of maybe 30 minutes at a time of running around trying to get that thing up. My kite flying arm(left) was sore the next day. But, I HAD TO get that kite to fly.

20140713-234743.jpg

20140713-234502.jpg

Xavi, Aspen, and I took turns trying to fly that thing, while Xavier and Jaelan laughed and pointed at us. They said I lied about knowing how to fly a kite. But, it turns out, I had the strings wrong, Xavi figured it out, and the stupid kite finally got up in the air. I said I knew how to FLY a kite, not how to CONSTRUCT one. But it finally flew, and Aspen was SO SO uber excited. And so I was happy.

20140713-234453.jpg

Aspen:

20140713-234435.jpg

While we were at a coffee shop last week, she scratched open a mosquito bite. We didn’t have any band-aids on hand, so she suggested we do this instead:

20140713-234815.jpg

And then she wanted to smell the flowers:

20140713-234840.jpg

Also, she loves her Doc McStuffins doctor set that she received for her birthday, and she loves to take your blood pressure, on your leg:

20140713-234418.jpg

Aspen is obsessed with Frozen. She watches it several times a day. She sometimes refers to herself as Anna. When one of her sisters are being mean to her, she tells us that Elsa is being mean. Also, she now offers kisses called, A True Love’s Kiss. She will caress your face from the forehead to your chin, then lift your chin up to her face, and give you a kiss. It is the cutest thing ever. I will try to get it on video. Finally, Aspen and the kitty still hates Fudge.

Week 40: Finally, Friday!!

20140614-113704.jpg

Happy Father’s Day Weekend! What are y’all doing this weekend? Hope everyone is able to take the time to celebrate dads this weekend or every weekend :). The girls are not here, so we are going to check out the first ever PorchFest KC and the first ever Boulervadia Beer Fest this weekend. Plus it’s the last episode of Game of Thrones, sad face.

Also, it rained cats and dogs for like 6 days in a row this week. That’s crazy.

Highlight:

Nothing much going on over here except work and randomness. Last weekend, Xavier and I checked out the Glass Labyrinth by Robert Morris at the Nelson. He is a local artist. It’s a pretty cool exhibit, and if you decided to go, be careful. We saw 2 kids get hurt running into the glass while trying to get to the middle.

20140614-113903.jpg

20140614-113912.jpg

We also checked out a couple of other outdoors exhibits at the Sculpture Park. Pretty solid, but I thought that the headless statues were creepy. And then we checked out Grunauer, an Austrian/German spot rated one of the top 21 beer gardens in the country. I thought the food was ok, didn’t do beer, and the garden was really nice, the awesome weather helped a lot.

20140614-113826.jpg

Quay Coffee had a little show with the band, Joseph, of Portland, OR. They are a talented group of sisters, and the lead can sang. Their genre is different from what I usually listen to, but good music. Gotta venture out sometimes.

Finally, we planted a garden. Yes, planted. a. garden. I am optimistic, but I doubt that it will survive, as the only living organisms that I have been able to grow in life so far, is children. Our first ivy here died, but Xavier brought it back to life. And Poppa told me that it takes a lot to kill an ivy. Also, one of the pepper plants has already been a casualty of our resident Bunny and/or maybe Princeton, Xavier’s pet chipmunk, who lives in one of trees in the back.

The Girls:

20140614-113757.jpg

They are still having too much fun in Texas. So much so, that Jaelan has ignored my requests for summertime photos. She said she will email them to me when she gets home from the park. That was like 5 days ago. She takes after me. So for now here are a couple from Nana Bubu.

20140614-113731.jpg

20140614-113713.jpg

Also, I don’t think Aspen likes Buc-ee. Weird kid. But, her cousin, Devi, loves him 🙂 SEE:

Easter 2014!!

20140421-001256.jpg

I hope everyone had a blessed and awesome Easter. I also hope everyone had the opportunity to appreciate the reason for the celebration: HE IS RISEN. This year, we enjoyed a nice dinner(Xavier grilled, as per usual) and missed family a little bit. Our families usually have a big family dinner after Easter service, so we missed that this weekend.

But all is well 🙂 We were invited by my friend, Lauren, to her church’s Easter Festival and we had a great time. Aspen and Xavi had a blast egg hunting and playing with Cole and Aidan, and enjoying all of the bounce houses. Cute moment of the day was when Cole helped Aspen find her eggs, they made a great team 🙂 The church grounds had the greenest grass and the weather was just beautiful. It was buzzing with activities and there so many people. And I had the darnest time trying to make sure Aspen stayed in line for all of the activities. Thanks again, Lauren, for inviting us, we had a great time! Here are a few photos 🙂

Week 32: Finally, Friday!!

20140420-222650.jpg

Happy Easter Weekend! I hope everyone gets a chance to appreciate the importance of this celebration. This week went by a little too slow, but still thankful, especially when you realize how close tragedy can hit. For those who have not had the chance to hear about the Jewish Community Center shooting last Sunday, that center is literally 2 minutes from the building where I go to work every morning. It is so close that when they held the memorial service this past Thursday, there was extra security around our parking lot to ensure safety. But more on this later on another post.

20140420-224040.jpg

Highlights:

Jaelan had her Talent Show tryout this week and she made it. She sang a Leona Lewis song. One of her favorite artists. She also her final honor choir concert this week. She was pretty sick, but made it through. She has really enjoyed choir this year and is very excited to go on to the middle school level.

20140420-223015.jpg

Xavi had her state exams this week. She missed one of them because she had a tummy ache, and had to go home early, but she was able to make it up the next day. Silly Xavi.

Also, today is Xavier and I’s 12th wedding anniversary 🙂

20140420-222914.jpg

Aspen:

Oh, Aspen, here she is, having a break down at the park 🙂

She is excited about going Easter egg hunting later this morning with her Xavi and her friend. One of the things I like about Aspen right now is that she thinks that everyone she meets is her new best friend. She also thinks that everyone who has the same name as her friends are also her best friends, she is funny. Example:

She overhears a lady call her son Aidan. Aspen happens to have a friend named Aidan.

Aspen: Oh, he’s Aidan? Aidan is my best friend, he(she point to the stranger Aidan) is my best friend!

Me; No, Aspen, that’s a different Aidan, he is not your best friend.

Aspen: No, mama, you silly, Aidan is my best friend.

Me: Yes, but, not that Aidan. We don’t know this Aidan, that Aidan is a stranger danger Aidan.

Aspen: Mama, no, Aidan is my best friend. You funny, mama!

You can see where that conversation was going. But I think she got it for the most part. I think it’s cute that kids think that anyone can be their best friend. If they only knew 🙂

Week 31: Finally, Friday!!

20140413-173444.jpg

Happy weekend! I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend 🙂 This week went by extra fast, probably because the weather was glorious 🙂 (Even though it is currently thundering, lightning, and hailing as I write this)

Highlights:

It was a pretty quiet and lazy week, hence the limited amount of photos from the week. The weather this week was so awesome, that we went to the park just about everyday after school/work and just enjoyed that I did not get a chance to do any photo taking. Hence, a limited amount of photos this week 🙂

Jaelan had two state exam days this week. She reports it being okay and not that bad. But then again, she says that about everything, so it’s hard to gauge. So, pray that she did well. I haven’t researched the significance of state exams here in Kansas, but if they are anything like in Texas, one cannot be promoted to the next grade without passing it.

Jaelan is also prepping for her school’s end of the year Talent Show. She won’t tell us what she is singing. I hope she makes it 🙂

As previously stated, Xavi’s state exams has been rescheduled, so she has yet to take them.

Finally, the big whoa this week was the, Rock the Parkway Half Marathon that I decided to run without doing any training for, or rather that crept up on me. More on this on another blog post.

20140413-173504.jpg

Aspen:

Aspen was pretty good THIS WEEK, and because I was too busy worrying about the run on Saturday, I didn’t get to write down any funny stuff that she said or did, plus there were too many to remember. She did tell me that she has a new favorite word, from one of the shows that she watches. I managed to talk her into telling you guys what it is in the videos below. The first video is of a failed attempt, and the second video is the success. Enjoy!

Week 30: Finally, Friday!!

20140407-000422.jpg

Happy weekend! (Tardy Version). If you are a super nerd like I am, you are extra happy that this weekend is here because Game of Thrones will be back in our lives. It should be illegal for networks to make fans wait over a year for their shows to return. But, that’s just my opinion. I am sure you Scandal fans can sympathize 🙂

Highlight:

The awesomeness factor for the week was Mimi coming to visit us. She flew in and surprised the girls (I lied and told them I was picking up a new pet) 🙂 They were so happy to see her and so were we. We haven’t seen family since the new year. Aspen was all over her Mimi and pretty much didn’t know who I was while she was here. But it’s ok, the girls needed their granny time. She took them shopping and savored every minute she was here. Goodbye was very tearful, especially for Aspen. They will not be coming with me to the airport next time. We are looking forward to the next visit.

Everyone was able to spend some quality time with her this time since Xavier and I both had a day off to spend with her and the girls. Since we have been to a few more places in Kansas City and OPK, we were able to show her a little bit of Kansas City. She got lucky and came on a first weekend, so I showed her around West Bottoms, since I had never been myself. It’s an interesting little part of KC, full of character.

20140407-002759.jpg

In other happenings, Xavi is pretty much blind. Her teacher advised us that she thinks Xavi needs eye glasses, so to the eye doctor she went. And it didn’t go well, she was getting all of the number and letters mixed up. She definitely NEEDS eye glasses. Xavi also had her year end scrabble tournament this week. The kids in the club practiced towards this final tournament and though she did not place in the top 3, she was still pretty happy about the whole idea of the scrabble club. She likes scrabble and that’s cool with me. You usually have to drag kids into this type of stuff. I love my little nerd babies. Her grade was also supposed to have their state exams this week, but it was cancelled, due to some system issues that the state was having, no re-test dates have been determined. They do that here? In Texas, all hell would break loose before they cancel state exams…..

20140407-000807.jpg

Finally, thanks to Xavier’s company, he was able to attend the Royals home opener against the White Sox and tail gate with his co-worker. He had a blast, except for one thing: IT WAS FREEZING. I was kind of bummed that I could not go cause it was in the middle of the day on a weekday, and because I am a huge sports fan, but after hearing about the weather, I was glad to be indoors. So, NFL and MLB games are definitely going to be an issue in the cold weather. Kansas City, y’all need a roof on y’all’s stadiums!

Aspen:

Aspen and her sisters went to my friend’s son’s birthday party, Happy Birthday Aiden!! They had a blast. It was a gymnastics theme party. And I am not talking about tots gymnastics. It was a full blown gymnastics gym. Aspen had a blast sliding, jumping and trampolining, and refused to do the zip line. The big girls got to try out the balance beam, the uneven bars, and the zip lines. I thought it was a brilliant theme because of the plethora of activities that the kids can choose from. Might have to try that for the girls, one of these birthdays.

Week 29: Finally, Friday!!

20140329-101150.jpg

Happy, Saturday!! Another week whizzed through ridiculously fast! March is almost over and crunch time at work will hopefully slow down, lol.

Highlights:

The big girls got plenty of outside time this week. We now welcome the 30s like it ain’t cold. Anything below that is dangerous for outside activities. I am really glad that we live within walking distance to a park, cause the girls can run out there whenever they want to.

Xavi is currently prepping for her first scrabble tournament coming up this Thursday, I know exciting 🙂 I hope she does really well and kicks ass. You can never be too competitive, even(or especially) with brain sports.

Jaelan had a performance in front of the entire 6th grade during lunch yesterday. I am happy to report that she said she received the most applause. I was not able to attend, due to her not telling me about it until Wednesday. She sang, “Happy”, by Leona Lewis, not the one by Pharrell.

Finally, Jaelan asked me if she can ask me a question one day during dinner this week. I was like um, uh, sure…..? She asked: How did the world come about, you know like life and earth and the solar system, and monkey. She said she has a couple of scientific theories about it, which we discussed, but she wanted to know what I thought. I welcome these type of questions over that other one.

Aspen:

Aspen has been missing out on a few park days the last couple of weeks because she has been taking naps, religiously, between 5-7pm. So, when she wakes up, there is barely enough sunlight to go play. I have no idea why she is so exhausted so late in the day. But it is AWESOME! When I get off of work she is knocked out and all is well and quiet and peaceful. Mwahahaha!!

PS: This week, a friend and I got to check out a wine bar I had been eyeing at the River Market. I joined the club and might blog about it after I get a feel(or fill) of the benefits. This is mostly due to my obsession with cocktail/spirits/wine/dranks.

Week 28: Finally, Friday!!

20140322-104039.jpg

According to someone’s calendar and such, Spring arrived this week. I have never been more excited for Spring’s arrival. EVER. I welcome the thawing out of the environment and time spent outdoors without fear of frostbite. Seriously. As someone who is new to “winter”, I kid you not, every time I stepped out in the cold without gloves, I was afraid, my fingers were gonna fall off.

Anyways, it has been a crazy week at work and at home, and since the weather has become bearable, I have also started running again, so as to not pass out at the half-marathon that I have decided to run in less than a month. So, this also means less time at the park with the girls 😦

The girls were on their Spring Break this week and with all of the busy-ness around here, I did not adequately plan any activities or our annual trip. The trip is scheduled later on in April. Time and I are just not vibing right now. I hope to catch up soon. Also, apologies for missing last week’s post. My phone decided to eat ALL of my photos and now they have all gone to picture heaven. And what’s a Friday post without photos? LAME.

As such, there is not much to highlight this week. Despite all of the busy-ness, I have been getting to hang out with the family a little more. While out window shopping this week, I found out that Jaelan LOVES to try on ridiculously high-heels and walk around in them in the shoe stores. We spent like 20 minutes letting her do this. I want that 20 minutes of my life back. Just kidding. She had a blast and I thought it was weird, because I hate high heels. She even tried on lots of what my sister, Paris and I call, “what the fcuk heels”. These are slightly taller than regular heels, but not quite hooker heels. YEAH.

20140322-105229.jpg

On the Aspen front, we have not been on the same page at all in the past two weeks, she hates me and wants nothing to do with me. Everything is my daddy this and my daddy that. WHATEVER. Go feed yourself. Just Kidding. Honestly, I don’t know where the animosity from here is coming from, I blame it on toddlerhood and the fact that she sees her dad more during the day. Anyway, I end up being all accommodating and non-disciplinarian when she does come around me. This is not working out well, as she now thinks that is the boss when I am around, and she tells me things like, “no” and “I don’t want to”, when I tell her to do things. And as is such, she has become pretty unbearable when in public without her dad. Not sure how or if I am going to address this issue, but it needs to rectify itself quickly. I don’t remember toddlerhood being this challenging with Jaelan and Xavi. SIGH.

Week 28 Gallery:

First Solo!

20140221-071256.jpg

Jaelan loves to sing. She sings all day, everyday. Music is a very accurate way to describe her. She has been in a school choir ever since she became old enough to join. When she found out we had to move to Kansas, the only thing she was worried about was if the school had a music program. I have no idea where she gets her musical acumen from, probably Xavier, but she is pretty good. I love that she loves music and I love that schools around here are continuing to nurture and prioritize music and fine arts in their curriculum. I hope she continues to love music and uses it for good in her life. And so that being said, last night, at Open House at her school, Jaelan had her first solo part.

About 2 weeks ago, Jaelan tried out for the small solo part in the choir concert and she got it, YAY! She had a great week last week, she had a birthday and she got the solo part that she had been obsessing about. It is also the first solo part that she has ever done, meaning she has never sang by herself in front of people. She was very nervous, but excited at the same time.

20140221-083033.jpg

Anyway, below is a video of the intro portion of her solo and another, longer video of the rest of the song. I thought she did great, she stood up front like a British Royal guard, I mean she didn’t move a hair. Aspen even cheered her on and called her name out, but Jaelan did not flinch. She said that she was concentrating on her dad’s and our faces in the crowd. After the show, she had several people compliment her on her performance and that gave her such a huge relief. We were proud parents and sisters tagging along. Anyways, hope you enjoy the videos! 🙂 GREAT JOB JAELAN!! YOU ROCK!!

Week 22: Snow Days!!!

20140207-005057.jpg

On Monday, everyone at work was talking about the storm that was coming on Tuesday morning. Sure enough, on Tuesday, we had our first, “snow storm”, here in Kansas. It snowed from 9am on Tuesday morning to about 8am on Wednesday morning, non-stop. I believe final measurements, according to varying sources were, snowfall of between 10 to 15 inches. School has been out since Tuesday, and I finally went back into the office on Thursday, Xavier did not get any snow days.

20140207-004942.jpg

20140207-005110.jpg

So, what did we do? Well aside from being stuck in the house, the girls played in the storm, tried to build an igloo, and I joined them once I finished working. Aspen played for bit, but she loathes the snow for the most part, and it didn’t help that she fell off of her wagon face down into the powdery snow. But, she is okay, and she would not walk on the snow afterwards. I’m sure our neighbors who were out shoveling snow probably thought we were crazy 🙂

The girls put their Colorado outfits on (thats what we call our snowboard/ski pants) and we played in that snow like we had never seen snow before. We’ve technically seen more snow than this, we just never had it in our front/backyards.

20140207-005250.jpg

The girls have been playing outside in the snow everyday since Tuesday, they are loving it! Lots of snow angels and snow ball fights. I am very surprised at how quickly they are adapting to the cold, I guess all of their energy keeps them warm, because they don’t need as many layers as I do. Unfortunately, Xavier had to work both days, so he missed all of the fun. Here are a few photos and a very short video from Snowmageddon 2014.
