In 350 Words or Less: Education Blues

schoolkids

If you are one of my kids, you know how, “tiger mom”, I am about education. I am very big on it and it saddens me to see the hit that education has or is taking in life right now or ever; from the ridiculous rising debt/cost of higher education to the rising gun violence on college campuses and public schools. I am pessimistic that, by the time Aspen makes it to college, it will be obsolete, and/or impossible for normal people to attain, and I am not just talking about higher education.

But worse, have you heard about the public school system in New Orleans, LA? I’m sure you have, if not, you can read about it here and here. I find it hard to believe that a major city in America can no longer afford to provide traditional public education to its children. Beginning next school year, New Orleans will have the first all-charter school system in the country. Charter schools are publicly funded, but operate independently

I am not sure if it is still the case today, I’m sure it has changed,  but when I was in grade school, charter schools were seen as negative, alternative school options. It was pretty much like where all of the bad kids go when they get kicked out of public and private school. According to several articles, the root of the change in New Orleans is corruption and poor performances. Maybe, it’s my ignorance of the system, and I will definitely find out more about it, but I don’t see how switching to an all charter school system will get rid of corruption and poor performance. If anything, I see more potential for a wider range of corruption in a charter organization and for the manifestation of a plethora of discriminatory issues. As the article states, it is still somewhat of an experiment, and I hope that it gets better for education in New Orleans. At the end of the day, we just want our kids to be able to go to school and receive a decent, if not, a good education.

Week 37: Finally, Friday!!

Happy Memorial Weekend! I hope everyone enjoy their long weekend with friends and family. Currently wishing I was back home. This week was pretty busy for us, I didn’t get a chance to post anything on the blog. I will have to make up for it this week.

*Also, I am currently attempting to re-design the blog on my own, therefore, until I have achieved a desired design, you might notice a few cosmetic changes. This should not interfere with any of the posts, but in the oft chance that it does, I apologize in advance for the inconvenience.*

Highlights:

Jaelan “graduated” from 6th grade this week. She received the Presidential Academic Award for the second year in a row, so she was very happy. Only a few students receive the award, so we are very proud of her. It capped off a pretty good week for her. She also did well at her end of the year talent show, see video below(excuse the video quality, iphone 4 and distance does not bode well for this task). We will have to work on stage presence and posture. She still gets as stiff as a stick when she gets in front of an audience.

A friend asked Xavier to fill in for a league flag football game this past weekend and he had a blast. It’s been a while, but he did pretty well, he had 3 touchdowns! He might have to become a regular. While he played, we also got to catch a cricket game at the park, and that is one interesting sport. I know nothing about it, but I love sports, so I might have to read up on it and at least learn how they score.

The big girls’ last week of school was this week, and they officially left us for grandma’s yesterday 😦 I miss them already 😦 But I know that they will have a great time with family down in Texas this summer. We took a long drive to Tulsa to meet up with Mimi, and I got a chance to check out Chimera, before we headed back home, because you know, coffee.

Aspen:

Aspen has been telling me that she is excited to be going to Mimi’s house all week. I told her I was going to miss her, see her response in our conversation below.

Also, ever since she asked us to read her this book called, My Blankie, she has been infatuated with various blankets and scarves, and won’t go anywhere without one, as evidenced by the photos above. Photo on the left, with a blanket at Jaelan’s talent show and her, “no pictures!!” face. The photo on the right, with a scarf at Jaelan’s 6th grade ceremony.

Oh, and she is trying to learn how to tie her shoe laces. She shows great initiative, in a hard headed, I want to do it myself, and hold up everyone’s time, kind of way, when she wants to accomplish something. I know this will be a great quality in the distant future. I mean look at that fierce face of concentration!

Me: Aspen, do you want to stay here with daddy and I?

Aspen: I am very excited to go to Mimi’s house. But, I will miss you, Mama.

Me: So, you don’t want to stay her with me? Well, I am going to miss you a lot.

Aspen: I am going to miss you too, I said, but I want to go to Mimi’s. I am ready to go to Mimi’s now, Mama.

Episode 3: The Dragon Lady Cocktail

gotdragon

This episode was obviously a filler, so I couldn’t decide on which drink to try. There was the total boldness of Cersei and Jamie. There was also Daenarys doing her usual thing, freeing people, being a bad ass, and such. I decided to go with a Daenarys and not the mentally deranged brother/sister couple.

The original recipe is from here.

Of course, I had no idea where the heck to find dragon fruit, so my version is sans the dragon fruit, which is the whole point of the drink. Also, not sure if that is why the color of mine is way different. I also added just a tad bit more mango juice cause I love mango 🙂 The drink is my favorite so far. It’s sweet with just the right amount of zip from the lime juice, just like Danny 🙂

20140501-132926.jpg

2oz Vodka (I used Tito’s, cause everything is hotter in Texas and dragons spit fire)

1.25oz mango juice

0.5oz triple sec

0.5oz lime juice

Place all materials in a shaker with ice and shake, shake. Strain into a glass and enjoy.

Episode 4: The Wall Cocktail

white-walker

This one was an easy choice, I wanted to make something related to the wall and the wights because they have finally made an appearance this season. I thought the insight into the wight’s world was the best part so far, behind Joffrey’s death of course.

20140501-132918.jpg

The drink itself, I did not particularly like because of the mint bitters. I don’t really like mint based cocktails. The first try, I put about 3-4 dashes of mint bitters and that was way too much. I also tried it without, and it was more to my liking, but it didn’t have that umph! factor that the bitters provide. If you are like me, limit the mint bitters to 1 or 2 dashes and you should be good.

20140501-132853.jpg

Also, the recipe calls for Plymouth Gin, but I like my Ransom, so I went with that(sometimes I don’t follow instructions too well). This is probably why my color is on the greenish side, which is fine with me because it’s kind of my play on the wights/undead.

The original recipe is from here. I did not do the dry ice business.

20140501-134043.jpg

2oz gin (I used Ransom, which is probably why my color is different)

0.5oz lime juice

0.5oz simple syrup

1 egg white

1-2 dashes of mint bitters

club soda

Place all ingredients except the club soda into a shaker with ice and shake, shake, shake. Strain into a pre-chilled glass of your choice and top off with the club soda and enjoy!
