Happy, Happy Birthday!!

20141115-213134.jpg

A happy, happy birthday to my favorite middle child, Xavi!! I cannot believe that you are TEN today. TEN. Double digits!! You love pumpkin bread, so I baked you a loaf this morning, so you can blow your candles. I love how simple yet interesting you are right now. I love that you love video games like your dad, love to read and go to coffee shops like I do, and love learning how to play the violin and soccer. You are not afraid to try new things.

20141115-213143.jpg

I love that your idea of “shopping”, is being able to buy $30 worth of candy at the candy store in Crown Center and getting a new Pokemon game. And when I asked you what you want to do for your birthday, you answered with, “Can I build a super fort!?”. Yes, you can, but not in the living room 🙂

20141115-212819.jpg

I hope you stay as humble and as ambitious as you are right now. I love your inquisitive mind and the billion questions that you ask me instead of googling stuff like your big sister does. I love how you don’t ever want to be an adult because you think that adults do too much stuff to “live”, and I love how you say that said you will stay a kid as long as you can 🙂

I also love how you like what you like and you don’t care what other kids/people think of it. That is going to be a very useful quality when you do become an adult, trust me. But most of all, I love how you tell me everything, good, bad, or sad. Don’t ever stop doing that 🙂

Anyways, I hope you like the pumpkin bread(You better!!) and I hope you enjoyed your day with your crazy family. I know you can’t wait to party and have fun with your friends!! 🙂 Happy Birthday, Xavi!!

Week 32: Finally, Friday!!

20140420-222650.jpg

Happy Easter Weekend! I hope everyone gets a chance to appreciate the importance of this celebration. This week went by a little too slow, but still thankful, especially when you realize how close tragedy can hit. For those who have not had the chance to hear about the Jewish Community Center shooting last Sunday, that center is literally 2 minutes from the building where I go to work every morning. It is so close that when they held the memorial service this past Thursday, there was extra security around our parking lot to ensure safety. But more on this later on another post.

Highlights:

Jaelan had her Talent Show tryout this week and she made it. She sang a Leona Lewis song. One of her favorite artists. She also her final honor choir concert this week. She was pretty sick, but made it through. She has really enjoyed choir this year and is very excited to go on to the middle school level.

Xavi had her state exams this week. She missed one of them because she had a tummy ache, and had to go home early, but she was able to make it up the next day. Silly Xavi.

Also, today is Xavier and I’s 12th wedding anniversary 🙂

Aspen:

Oh, Aspen, here she is, having a break down at the park 🙂

She is excited about going Easter egg hunting later this morning with her Xavi and her friend. One of the things I like about Aspen right now is that she thinks that everyone she meets is her new best friend. She also thinks that everyone who has the same name as her friends are also her best friends, she is funny. Example:

She overhears a lady call her son Aidan. Aspen happens to have a friend named Aidan.

Aspen: Oh, he’s Aidan? Aidan is my best friend, he(she point to the stranger Aidan) is my best friend!

Me; No, Aspen, that’s a different Aidan, he is not your best friend.

Aspen: No, mama, you silly, Aidan is my best friend.

Me: Yes, but, not that Aidan. We don’t know this Aidan, that Aidan is a stranger danger Aidan.

Aspen: Mama, no, Aidan is my best friend. You funny, mama!

You can see where that conversation was going. But I think she got it for the most part. I think it’s cute that kids think that anyone can be their best friend. If they only knew 🙂

First Solo!

20140221-071256.jpg

Jaelan loves to sing. She sings all day, everyday. Music is a very accurate way to describe her. She has been in a school choir ever since she became old enough to join. When she found out we had to move to Kansas, the only thing she was worried about was if the school had a music program. I have no idea where she gets her musical acumen from, probably Xavier, but she is pretty good. I love that she loves music and I love that schools around here are continuing to nurture and prioritize music and fine arts in their curriculum. I hope she continues to love music and uses it for good in her life. And so that being said, last night, at Open House at her school, Jaelan had her first solo part.

About 2 weeks ago, Jaelan tried out for the small solo part in the choir concert and she got it, YAY! She had a great week last week, she had a birthday and she got the solo part that she had been obsessing about. It is also the first solo part that she has ever done, meaning she has never sang by herself in front of people. She was very nervous, but excited at the same time.

Anyway, below is a video of the intro portion of her solo and another, longer video of the rest of the song. I thought she did great, she stood up front like a British Royal guard, I mean she didn’t move a hair. Aspen even cheered her on and called her name out, but Jaelan did not flinch. She said that she was concentrating on her dad’s and our faces in the crowd. After the show, she had several people compliment her on her performance and that gave her such a huge relief. We were proud parents and sisters tagging along. Anyways, hope you enjoy the videos! 🙂 GREAT JOB JAELAN!! YOU ROCK!!

Week 23: Happy, Happy Birthday!!!

Happy, happy, happy birthday to my favorite, most beautiful first born in the whole wide world!! 🙂

j7

You are getting so big, like literally, you are almost bigger than me! 🙂 I can’t believe that you are almost a teenager, even though your, “tude”, serves as a constant reminder. And even though you can be as lazy as I was at your age, you are the most awesome dishwasher and big sister to Xavi and Terminator. I love how you love music and singing, but I am weirded out by your affinity for the vampire and zombie culture. I love that you have your own little style, cause I didn’t have none of that at your age. I love how you love detective and cop shows, like Castle and The Mentalist, cause I used to love Matlock and Perry Mason, so close enough 🙂 And I love how you asked, “So you were once “cool”!?”, when I told you I that I like and listen to rap and screw.

You are turning out to be an awesome, smart, talented, and a very down to earth little lady, and I hope that you stay that way. Change as you may, but stay true to yourself! I hope you liked your pancake stack and I hope you have a happy, happy birthday! I love you!!

A Letter For, Ma!

Dear Ma,

Today was your *th birthday, and because we are far, far away, we couldn’t sing you, “Happy Birthday”, in person. So, we did the next best thing, we made you a video.

SIGH. If you only knew the effort that it took and the number of takes we had to do because Aspen was being such a, ahem, toddler, you would understand, why we eventually had to settle for this, “final cut”. Let’s just say, that as always, there were lots of protests and tears, and, “I don want to!”(s). I had to bribe her with the candy dispenser full of Skittles, which she is holding on to in the video. And that blue stuff running down her chin? Skittle juice.

Nonetheless, mission was accomplished, and Mom, Happy Birthday, from Kansas. You are a very special person and we love you very much. ENJOY!

Love,

Your Favorites 🙂

About/Review: Wren is an 8 year old girl, who becomes friends with Darra in a weird way. Darra’s dad steals Wren’s mom’s car with her in it, drives it to his house, and kidnaps Wren without knowing. Wren becomes captured in Darra’s garage, and Darra realizes that there is a girl in the stolen car. Wren and Darra become friends without ever seeing other, and Darra does nice things for Wren, like leaving her food. Wren escapes after a while with the help of Darra’s cat.

This part of the book was had lots of suspense and got my attention right away. I couldn’t put the book down as soon as Wren got kidnapped by Darra’s dad. I also like how the author had animal characters that were very important to the story, like Archie, the cat.

Years and years go by, Wren and Darra are now 14. Wren and Darra meet each other in a summer camp. At first they don’t talk to each other, then they found out they are in the same cabin. Wren notices that Darra is treated differently because she is poor. So, after a while, they become friends, they talk about what happened back in Darra’s garage, and at the end Darra introduces Wren to her mother.

I liked this part because I wanted to know how Wren and Darra felt about what happened and about each other. I liked how Wren forgave Darra’s dad and I liked how Darra forgave Wren for all of the bad things that she created for her family, like getting her dad sent to prison. I didn’t like how Darra’s went prison, cause he was just trying to get money for his family and no one accepted him. But, I didn’t like how he hit his wife and Darra. This book was very interesting and I like how it was written from Wren and Darra’s sides.

Favorite Character: Wren, because she sees the best in people.

Favorite Theme: Lend a helping, Friendship, Forgiveness, Love

Favorite Part: When Darra introduces Wren to her mom.

Least Favorite/Dislike: When Darra’s dad hit his wife and Darra.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

PS: Bluefish was boring and I didn’t like it, so I took it back to the library, and read this one instead. Sorry, mom.
