Finally, Friday!!

20141010-012313.jpg

Happy Friday!! Fall is here and are you ready for the weekend? Since the Texans broke my heart last night, I’ll be cheering for the Royals tonight.

Last month marked one year of blogging. Time flies. Though I haven’t blogged in over a month, I am glad to be back.

Also, I decided to continue with this series. Year 2 Week 1 will start next week.

Highlights:

20141010-011931.jpg

It’s been a little busy over here. The girls picked up their after school sports and activities this season. Xavi is playing league soccer and Jaelan is running on the Cross Country team at her school. Middle school sports is limited here, so after cross country, kids pretty much play league sports.

20141010-012244.jpg

Xavi’s soccer team is currently undefeated and in First place. She loves being back on the soccer field. She has always had fun, but this year is special because this is the first winning/dominating team that she has ever played for. Side Note: Apparently I get too loud during the games, so Xavi asked me to stop yelling too loud.

20141010-012048.jpg

20141010-011914.jpg

Xavi expressed her desire to learn how to play the violin, so she signed up for it at school and she is currently taking private lessons. Let us pray it works.

20141010-012304.jpg

This is Jaelan’s first year of Cross Country competition. She has improved her time with every race, so I’ll take that as a win. She doesn’t understand why people would voluntarily run miles for no reason. I told her so that she won’t get fat. Just kidding.

Jaelan is doing choir again this year, and she tried out for state. She will find out if she makes it in November. Cross your fingers, toes, and tails.

Aspen:

I had lots of Aspen smart ass remarks to share with y’all, but then I lost my paper where I wrote down all of it. So, you will have to wait until I remember them.

New things about Terminator:

1. Her new favorite song is, “Bout the Base”.

2. She loves penguins.

20141010-011949.jpg

20141010-011957.jpg

3. She wants to be Elsa for Halloween.

4. She has fallen in love with soccer from watching Xavi play. I told her that she had to be five years old to join a team. So, she has told anyone who will listen that she is skipping four years old and going straight to five years old after her next birthday, so that she can play soccer.

Here she is “practicing” her soccer dribbling skills:

Week 50: Finally, Friday!!

20140901-110705.jpg

Happy Labor Day! I hope everyone is enjoying their time off from work! Who is bbq-ing today!? The weather here is clearing up, hopefully, just in time for backyard BBQ and drinks. Also, I am not sure if this series will continue after the one year post, which is only 2 weeks away. A weekly post can get a little redundant, maybe we will switch over to a monthly recap instead, we will see where it goes.

Highlights:

20140901-105959.jpg

20140901-105951.jpg

Since I missed quite a few weeks of recap, I will include a few highlights: We have had a pretty busy summer, maybe one too many trips to Houston. Aspen and Xavier celebrated birthdays in June and July, and there was a wedding in the family. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Day!!

The girls started school about 2 weeks ago, a week earlier than Texas. Jaelan is now in 7th grade and in middle school, and Xavi is in 5th grade. Jaelan was really excited about getting a locker, she didn’t even care about school supplies, she just wanted locker decorations. Tweens.

20140901-110056.jpg

Also, Jaelan went to her first ever middle school dance this past Friday. Didn’t school just start? She said that some boy asked her to go to the dance, but she turned him down, and he moved on to the next girl. *Pause* Life needs to chill, like for real.

Jaelan will continue with choir because she loves it and, Xavi has joined the strings at school. Goodness gracious. I hope she likes the basement because that is where she will be practicing! Just kidding. I think it’s great that she wants to learn how to play the violin.

This past week, the girls started their fall sports activities. Jaelan is doing cross country, I’m not yet sure if she knows what that means. But we told her that it’s not one mile, not three miles, but lots and lots of miles. Her first track meet is on the 6th. Xavi is doing soccer, this week was her first week of practice, her first game is on the 6th.Β Jaelan is getting used running long distances, she is always pooped and hungry when she comes home. We are gonna have to get her more acquainted with a high carb diet. Xavi is getting used to big girl soccer. So, drills and fundamentals. She is playing for an U11 team, and yes, she is the smallest kid on the team. The coach loves her energy, she doesn’t seem to get tired, lol. But, she has taken a long break from soccer, so she needs to brush up on her skills.

Aspen:

Aspen started back at day care last week because our schedule is just too crazy to stay with her at home. So, there was a lot of meltdown and tears. She gets all excited and ready to go. But, when we get there to drop her off, she just loses it. One day, the teacher had to pry her off of me, because she was holding on really tight. Poor kid. This too shall pass.

Happy Mother’s Day!!

20140511-074726.jpg

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and to Mimi and to all of the mothers in our family. I hope you enjoy your day with your families. No inspirational text needed, you guys are the greatest and no words can justify that.

Five (of the many) reasons why I love being a mother:

1. Motherhood is challenging, and I love a great challenge.

2. Motherhood is hugs and kisses from my girls.

3. Motherhood is a privilege.

4. Motherhood is rewarding.

5. Motherhood is love.

Five things that I need to improve as a mother:

1. Do better on everything.

2. Make more time.

3. Be more patient.

4. Relax.

5. Understand that not every win is good thing and that not every failure is a bad thing.

Week 11: Finally, Friday!!

Yes, I know what you are thinking, it’s Saturday. Well, it took 11 posts, but a Friday post is a day late. I think I did well! πŸ™‚ Happy Saturday! One more week before Thanksgiving Holiday, we are getting excited! I can taste all of the food and awesomeness! πŸ™‚

Week 11 Highlights:

Jaelan and I went to 17th and Summit this past weekend, just the two of us. I am ecstatic to report that she likes to look and shop for, “old and cool things”(antiques). YAY! She purchased an old, silver fountain pen and ink holder for $3. I think she has an antique eye πŸ™‚ She also wants an, “old looking desk” for her room (see photo below). I told her only if she lets me paint it yellow or red πŸ™‚

Xavi did not have a good ending to her week. That is all.

The big girls learned how to play dominoes this week. They were surprised at how much math is involved. Jaelan won round 1. Prepping for Thanksgiving games.

Aspen:

Conversations with Aspen this week:

Number 1

Me: Aspen, whose nose do you have? Daddy’s nose or mommy’s nose?

Aspen: I have Aspen’s nose. My nose, not your nose.

Of course. DUH.

Number 2

Xavier: Look, Aspen it’s a t-rex! (Shows Aspen a t-rex toy while we were at Toys ‘r’ Us)

Aspen: Daddy, das NOT a T-REX! It’s a DINOSAUR!

Of course. DUH.

Number 3

Me: Come here, kid!

Aspen: Mommy, I am not kid, I am Aspen, I told you, aw weady!

Of course. DUH. She must think we are very slow and not smart at all, πŸ™‚ TODDLERS.

Extra:

Aspen: Mommy, I like monies, I need to get more monies. Mommy can I have 4 monies? (Holds up 4 fingers! )

PS:Β I tried 2 new recipes and 2 cocktail recipes this week: Moroccan chicken and a version of Coq au vin, with white wine. The first one wasn’t so popular, they all gave me a hard time about the cumin smelling like a bag of arm pits, Xavi ate her food with a blanket over her head. She said it tasted good. The Coq au vin was more popular among the masses. The cocktails are a version of the Woodstock cocktail that I found onΒ the CampgroundKC, and vodka sunrise, a take on tequila sunrise, but with vodka. Both were awesome. Recipes later this week.

Week 10: Finally, Friday!!

Xavi2

Happy Friday, everyone!! Looking forward to the weekend, but more importantly, someone has a birthday this weekend! πŸ™‚ (This is one of my favorite photos of her πŸ™‚ )

Week 10 Highlights:

Things were pretty slow this week, Aspen was a bit under the weather, and it was very cold, so this will be short. Kind of.

Jaelan had her second choir concert this week, the Fall Music Festival. The program was a very sub-par, something between not enough preparation or just nerves maybe? The strings and the band had to re-start several times on the few pieces that they were able to play, but the crowd was very forgiving and appreciative, and the kids were still very cute πŸ™‚ Jaelan was disappointed and embarrassed by the performance, including the choir’s, even though they seemed the most prepared group. I told her that there will be times like that and to forget about it and prepare for the next one. You can’t win them all, so keep playing πŸ™‚

Also, did I mention that someone has a birthday this weekend? πŸ™‚

Xavi3

Aspen needs to be potty trained ASAP, because, she is now taking off her pull ups when she has an accident and then hiding them…..not in the trash. She then puts on new ones and act like nothing happened. This kid kills me. I couldn’t tell you how many pull ups we went through this week. SIGH.

Also, Aspen was out voted on taco night, she voted for pizza. So, we went to a taco place, she gets chicken quesadillas, and she tells us, “My chicken pizza is weally good, y’all!!”. She makes me laugh.

PS: We put together a box for a local organization to send to the motherland. Family are safe. I wish we were closer there, so we can do more.

Houston Texans, Houston Cougars, and Houston Rockets on tv

In 350 Words or Less

The NBA season is upon us and frankly, with the way the Texans season is going, I am trying not to get over excited. I vaguely kept up with the Rockets during the preseason, and saw glimpses of legitimacy. Superstitious Janis was a little nervous with the winning preseason record because the Rockets seem to do the opposite during the regular season. Nonetheless, because I don’t live in Houston anymore, I can watch virtually ALL of their games, home and away. BAM!

Here’s is my take after the first 3 games, (and I know it is WAY too early in the season):

LIKES: potential, rebounds, Howard, the Beard, and Casspi.

DISLIKES: turnovers and inability to destroy.

If this team stays healthy, they will contend, but already Patrick Beverly is out and Casspi was out against the Jazz. I am not a D12 fan, but if he continues to play like he is playing, stay healthy, be satisfied with a sub-20 scoring average, and don’t whine, I can learn to like. I see lots of rebounds in the future with D12 and Asik, but I think together on the floor, they are slow as heck. My favorite off season acquisition is Omri Casspi, i think he is a steal, if he stays healthy.

However, if we do not limit the turnovers, it ain’t gonna be pretty. For now, I am attributing the 20 average TOs in the first 3 games to the infancy of the season and learning to mesh. Finally, I saw age old Rockets habits in the last 30-40 seconds of the Mavs game, Mavs got within 5 points with 21 seconds left. If we do that in the playoff or against other contenders, we will lose. The Rockets are young and energetic, but they have got to learn how to destroy and conquer, early on.

Prediction: I don’t think we are going to win it all or the West. But I like where the team is headed, maybe next year. And on the oft chance that we do win it all, I will definitely be down for the parade πŸ™‚

Aspen and I, at her first Rockets game (2012). GO ROCKETS!! πŸ™‚

Week 8: Finally, Friday!!

20131101-160253.jpg 20131101-154856.jpg

Happy FRIDAY, Everyone!!! It has been a pretty good week, with my mom’s birthday and Halloween being highlights.

Also, how awesome is it that November is upon us? The holidays are here and so are the RED CUPS! November is a busy month for us, cause it is Xavi’s and Mimi’s birthday month and Xavier’s favorite holiday, Thanksgiving! UBER YAY!!

Week 8 Highlights:

It was Halloween week, so the (big) girls pretty much lived for Thursday night this week. They were planning all of the evil things that they can do at school with their candy loot.

Also, Jaelan and Xavi refused to carry one of those colorful pumpkin buckets because, and I quote: “This tiny bucket will not produce maximum desired output, I’m bringing a pillow case”-Jaelan. Well, excuse me.

Halloween Night:

Aspen was a little more aware of Halloween activities this year and was a hit with the treat givers:

1. Big girls run up to the door, wait for Aspen to catch up, and then knock.

2. Treat givers open their doors, Aspen yells out,”Twick a Tweet”, grab some candy, throws them in her bag, and tells the treat givers, upon encouragement, “Have good night”, turns, and walks away.

3. Treat givers squeel,”OMG!!!! You are SOOOO cute!!”, and she politely replies, after some encouraging, “Tenchu!(Thank You)”.

This was pretty much every house that we hit up and by the end of it all, the big girls are on to the next house, so we played catch up the whole night.

One gentleman got all the way down on his hands and knees to talk to Aspen. Hilarity(or strange), and she was, “Retty go (Ready to go)”.

20131101-155035.jpg

PS: My friend and I won the tandem Halloween costume contest at work….cause we were the only tandem. BAM! I was a bar of soap and she was a loofa. What did we win, you ask?

20131101-162631.jpg

Golden Tickets to the front of the Thanksgiving Feast line. Pffft! Whatever, right? Well, hold on! Apparently, at the Q, by 1030am, the feast line is wrapped around the cafeteria and into the halls. REALLY? This must be some feast, and since this is my first time, I am holding on to my, “Golden Ticket”. POW!

PSS: Good news, I finally figured out who, “Chey Chey” is. If you don’t remember, read this. I’m keeping a close eye out on this kid. She is cute though, and I hope she was just having a bad day.

A Letter For, Ma!

Dear Ma,

Today was your *th birthday, and because we are far, far away, we couldn’t sing you, “Happy Birthday”, in person. So, we did the next best thing, we made you a video.

SIGH. If you only knew the effort that it took and the number of takes we had to do because Aspen was being such a, ahem, toddler, you would understand, why we eventually had to settle for this, “final cut”. Let’s just say, that as always, there were lots of protests and tears, and, “I don want to!”(s). I had to bribe her with the candy dispenser full of Skittles, which she is holding on to in the video. And that blue stuff running down her chin? Skittle juice.

Nonetheless, mission was accomplished, and Mom, Happy Birthday, from Kansas. You are a very special person and we love you very much. ENJOY!

Love,

Your Favorites πŸ™‚

Week 7: Finally, Friday!!

20131025-154600.jpg

Happy Friday!! Glad it’s Friday, as usual, but I needed another day and a half for work! It was a pretty busy and exhausting week, but what else is new, right? The only thing that pretty much happened from the weekend list, was 2/3 Halloween costumes, Jaelan couldn’t find one. This pumpkin patch visit is becoming very elusive, but at least it made it to the list, which means it ain’t happening πŸ™‚

Week 7 Highlights:

Aspen

After 7 weeks of tears and protests, Aspen has finally gotten used to, and I assume, understand the role of daycare in her life: it is a necessary evil. So, she has given up on crying and protesting for more sleep every morning. Of course there is catch. She has to have one of her 3 princesses, tinkerbell erasers, in her pocket. But who cares, just glad that she is now comfortable with daycare. WOOT.

Aspen’s new favorite word this week: Probably.

Example: “I going to sleep in your bed, probably”, which means, definitely.

This week, “Chey Chey” apparently went on a rampage and punch/hit a couple or four kids in her class. Aspen was one of them. On the mouth, big top lip. She told me about it, I asked her did she hit her back, she said no. I told her next time to punch her back like she punches the punching bag at home, no regrets. She said, OK. You will NOT be BULLIED. And I am not ashamed.

Jaelan and Xavi:

Jaelan had her first choir festival on Tuesday(see video snippet below, they are the group in the white). In Kansas, they are serious about their choir. It was pretty impressive compared to the choir program back home. Unfortunately, they would not let us get close for photos, so what I have is it 😦

Xavi passed up her dad on Diablo III and that’s it. SIGH.

PS: We had game night with new friends for the first time since we moved here. It was great.

Week 6: Finally, Friday!!

Happy FRIDAY!! Very glad it’s the weekend. It was a busy week at work and it was cold ALL week and it’s only OCTOBER! It is too early to be this cold! I hope this is fake cold weather and it goes away until December.SIGH. I can hope.

Week 6 Highlights:

Aspen:

Her vocabulary, while fairly advanced for her age, is still primitive when it comes to more difficult words, like spaghetti. This week, her word for spaghetti is a little closer to the actual word:

Before this week: spaghetti/noodles = yew

This week: spaghetti = comegettis.

Progress is awesome πŸ™‚

On Tuesday, I snuck up on her when she was unbelievably quiet in our room, and this is what the big girls and I found:

20131018-230643.jpg

20131018-230506.jpg

20131018-230520.jpg

It’s Friday, and after 3 days of washing her hair, it’s still GREASY.

Jaelan and Xavi:

Jaelan and I got ourselves matching boots this week, HERS is a size 7 in women’s and mine is a 6.5 in girls. How did this happen?

One of the girls revealed to me that, one time, when their armpit smelled like garlic or onion, they tried to lick it to see if it taste like garlic or onion, they succeeded. I was speechless. GROSS. Can you guess which one?

I went to my room and LAUGHED and LAUGHED, silently, then I went back down and lectured about not licking armpits cause of gross germs and such. I can’t make this up.

Convo with one of them:

Me: What is an iambic pentameter?

Response: (And confidently, might I add), It is the sound the refrigerator makes in the middle of the night. *Walks away before I can correct her*.

Me: Huh? What? SIGH.

I am slightly concerned, but they brought home all A’s this week, so, I am good for now.

PS: Jaelan said that there’s a boy in her class named James(changed), but he calls himself, Tina. Why?

I need answers to these questions.
