Week 50: Finally, Friday!!

Happy Labor Day! I hope everyone is enjoying their time off from work! Who is bbq-ing today!? The weather here is clearing up, hopefully, just in time for backyard BBQ and drinks. Also, I am not sure if this series will continue after the one year post, which is only 2 weeks away. A weekly post can get a little redundant, maybe we will switch over to a monthly recap instead, we will see where it goes.

Since I missed quite a few weeks of recap, I will include a few highlights: We have had a pretty busy summer, maybe one too many trips to Houston. Aspen and Xavier celebrated birthdays in June and July, and there was a wedding in the family. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Day!!

The girls started school about 2 weeks ago, a week earlier than Texas. Jaelan is now in 7th grade and in middle school, and Xavi is in 5th grade. Jaelan was really excited about getting a locker, she didn’t even care about school supplies, she just wanted locker decorations. Tweens.

Also, Jaelan went to her first ever middle school dance this past Friday. Didn’t school just start? She said that some boy asked her to go to the dance, but she turned him down, and he moved on to the next girl. *Pause* Life needs to chill, like for real.

Jaelan will continue with choir because she loves it and, Xavi has joined the strings at school. Goodness gracious. I hope she likes the basement because that is where she will be practicing! Just kidding. I think it’s great that she wants to learn how to play the violin.

This past week, the girls started their fall sports activities. Jaelan is doing cross country, I’m not yet sure if she knows what that means. But we told her that it’s not one mile, not three miles, but lots and lots of miles. Her first track meet is on the 6th. Xavi is doing soccer, this week was her first week of practice, her first game is on the 6th.ย Jaelan is getting used running long distances, she is always pooped and hungry when she comes home. We are gonna have to get her more acquainted with a high carb diet. Xavi is getting used to big girl soccer. So, drills and fundamentals. She is playing for an U11 team, and yes, she is the smallest kid on the team. The coach loves her energy, she doesn’t seem to get tired, lol. But, she has taken a long break from soccer, so she needs to brush up on her skills.

Aspen:

Aspen started back at day care last week because our schedule is just too crazy to stay with her at home. So, there was a lot of meltdown and tears. She gets all excited and ready to go. But, when we get there to drop her off, she just loses it. One day, the teacher had to pry her off of me, because she was holding on really tight. Poor kid. This too shall pass.

SXSW Spy!!

SXSW-2014

South by Southwest kicks off this weekend and of course I won’t be there. SAD FACE. ย If you live under a rock and do not know what it is, go here. It’s basically a huge creatives(music, film, craft goods, ect.) festival thing in Austin, Texas. (Hook ‘Em!) Besides getting to listen to awesome music and see lots of creativity, it is also a huge learning and networking event for literally everyone, for both the participants and the attendees. I am loving some of the lineups this year, and of course Renegade Craft Fair will be there. If you go, get me something ๐Ÿ™‚

SXSW has an interactive segment, in which, the issue of surveillance, online privacy, and technology are leading topics. They keep it weird in Austin, so you get music, film, creative trade crafts, food, meet and greets, book signings, and moderated panel discussions. What peaked my interest, cause I am a current affairs nerd, is Edward Snowden will be speaking via video conference, specifically on March 10, regarding NSA surveillance, technology, and the technology community. If you don’t know who Edward Snowden is, go here. Technology and the digital/online community is of great significance to the SXSW culture. This is a great opportunity to reach a large number of people, whose trade and craft rely heavily on the digital world, and to everyone who has ever used technology, so that means you ๐Ÿ™‚ The discussion will be moderated by an American Civil Liberties Union director, and regardless of your opinion of Snowden and of his involvement with the NSA, Russia, or anything in particular, this should be an informative session and interesting. I will probably watch the stream. I’m just saying.

First Solo!

20140221-071256.jpg

Jaelan loves to sing. She sings all day, everyday. Music is a very accurate way to describe her. She has been in a school choir ever since she became old enough to join. When she found out we had to move to Kansas, the only thing she was worried about was if the school had a music program. I have no idea where she gets her musical acumen from, probably Xavier, but she is pretty good. I love that she loves music and I love that schools around here are continuing to nurture and prioritize music and fine arts in their curriculum. I hope she continues to love music and uses it for good in her life. And so that being said, last night, at Open House at her school, Jaelan had her first solo part.

About 2 weeks ago, Jaelan tried out for the small solo part in the choir concert and she got it, YAY! She had a great week last week, she had a birthday and she got the solo part that she had been obsessing about. It is also the first solo part that she has ever done, meaning she has never sang by herself in front of people. She was very nervous, but excited at the same time.

Anyway, below is a video of the intro portion of her solo and another, longer video of the rest of the song. I thought she did great, she stood up front like a British Royal guard, I mean she didn’t move a hair. Aspen even cheered her on and called her name out, but Jaelan did not flinch. She said that she was concentrating on her dad’s and our faces in the crowd. After the show, she had several people compliment her on her performance and that gave her such a huge relief. We were proud parents and sisters tagging along. Anyways, hope you enjoy the videos! ๐Ÿ™‚ GREAT JOB JAELAN!! YOU ROCK!!

Week 14: Finally, Friday!!

20131214-101130.jpg

I know, it’s Saturday, again. It was a very tiring and trying week. There were three concerts this week, twice in one night, a delirious, sick, demanding toddler for three days, busy work week, and no posts at all during the week, so bad blogger! But, and this is a big but, we are two weeks away from Christmas ๐Ÿ™‚ JOY.

Week 14 Highlights:

Jaelan and Xavi had a lot of activities this week. Well, mostly Jaelan. On Tuesday, Xavi had her recorder concert. YES. You remember those recorders that they used to give you in elementary school? Well, here, they have concerts for them. And it was different. After the kids performed, which was pretty good might I add. The kids passed out (clean)recorders to the audience(Eww.) and taught us a few cords, ending with the audience playing the first 3 songs that the kids played. The audience did well. I thought it was gross, so I didn’t participate. Are you kidding me? Jaelan had math competitions on Wednesday and school choir concert and honor choir concert on the same day on Thursday. The honor choir was with one of the local high school’s annual Winter Concerts, so it was a large audience performance. They take their fine arts seriously around here. Jaelan was so happy and the kids did well, they fit right in with the high school performers. I was all music out by the end of it all.

Conversation with Jaelan:

Me: Zay, have you heard the new R. Kelly album?

Jaelan: R. Kelly is famous because he is a pimp.

Me: What? How do you know he is a pimp?

Jaelan: He is a pimp because he wears a furry coat, a pimp hat, alligator shoes, and he has lots of money.

I like her definition of a pimp. Innocence, I hope she keeps it a while. Plus, it was funny.

Aspen:

I don’t have 2 words for how terrible this kid is when she is pretty sick. Ok, maybe: demanding and outrageous. She was sick from Wednesday to still pending. But, and this is a big but, she is officially potty trained.

Aspen: Janis Mama, I need to potty.

Me: Ok, let’s go. Do you need to pee-pee or poop?

Aspen: I gotta take a shit.

THE END.
