Summer Fun in West Virginia!!

20140824-235040.jpg

**A little apology for taking over a month hiatus from the blog. It has been a quite a bumpy and busy month, and I am finally catching up on a lot of things, including the blog. YAY!** I thought I would start back up with the girls’ last summer stop.

I am a little bummed that summer is “over”. The girls have officially started another school year, and we now have a 7th grader and a 5th grader. However, they have had a fun and full summer, visiting family and friends, in Texas and West Virginia.

The girls spent their last bit of summer in West Virginia, visiting with my sister for the first time. She has a nice little property up there and the girls have been asking all year to go and visit. Our work schedule did not allow Xavier and I to join them, plus I am just bad at planning.

From what I heard, the girls had a blast up there and we might even make it an annual summer destination for them. They love it up there and they also learned a lot about living off of the land and survival skills. Plus they get to ride around in a four wheeler, a tractor, and have water balloon fights. I was uber jealous.

They also learned how to shoot, and Boogie looks like a natural. Don’t worry, my sister is a professional with weapons and an awesome teacher. She is a former military police with a tour in South Korea, Afghanistan, and Iraq, under her belt. If I want anyone to teach my girls about guns and gun safety, it would be her. They also learned about fire safety and how to start a camp fire.

And of course, Aspen’s favorite were the animals. The girls got to help out around the place and feed the animals every morning. But they stayed away from the big pot belly pig named Becky.

Since, I was not up here, pictures were very limited, but here are a few and a couple of videos of the big girls learning how to shoot.

Week 44: Finally, Friday!!

20140713-234800.jpg

Happy end of the weekend! Here is late Friday post. I hope you had a great weekend. Congratulations to Germany for winning the World Cup, as I had predicted(on my bracket). But, the Rockets are not having a good week in the free agency world. So, hopefully the coming weeks will be better. I really, really, really doubt that Trevor Ariza will make a significant (or any) difference for us. So, find someone else, anyone else.

Highlights:

It was a pretty uneventful week. We beat the heat this week, by going to a friend’s pool. This month, we are having Summer Games at work. I played in the Dodge Ball tournament. We won one and lost one. The winners were insane, I would have lost a limb as hard as they were throwing those soft ass balls. This week, I am doing the Free Throw contest, wish me luck. And Xavier and I finally got to check out Barrel 31. They have a great Happy Hour.

20140713-234753.jpg

Xavier took us to a huge park last weekend. I can say this about Kansas: They know how to do parks. Shawnee Mission Park is huge and full of activities.

20140713-234519.jpg

Aspen received a kite for her birthday, and she has been wanting to fly it, so we decided to have a picnic and fly kites at Shawnee Mission last weekend. I do not remember kite flying being so difficult when I was younger. I mean it took me, 3 tries of maybe 30 minutes at a time of running around trying to get that thing up. My kite flying arm(left) was sore the next day. But, I HAD TO get that kite to fly.

20140713-234743.jpg

20140713-234502.jpg

Xavi, Aspen, and I took turns trying to fly that thing, while Xavier and Jaelan laughed and pointed at us. They said I lied about knowing how to fly a kite. But, it turns out, I had the strings wrong, Xavi figured it out, and the stupid kite finally got up in the air. I said I knew how to FLY a kite, not how to CONSTRUCT one. But it finally flew, and Aspen was SO SO uber excited. And so I was happy.

Aspen:

20140713-234435.jpg

While we were at a coffee shop last week, she scratched open a mosquito bite. We didn’t have any band-aids on hand, so she suggested we do this instead:

20140713-234815.jpg

And then she wanted to smell the flowers:

20140713-234840.jpg

Also, she loves her Doc McStuffins doctor set that she received for her birthday, and she loves to take your blood pressure, on your leg:

20140713-234418.jpg

Aspen is obsessed with Frozen. She watches it several times a day. She sometimes refers to herself as Anna. When one of her sisters are being mean to her, she tells us that Elsa is being mean. Also, she now offers kisses called, A True Love’s Kiss. She will caress your face from the forehead to your chin, then lift your chin up to her face, and give you a kiss. It is the cutest thing ever. I will try to get it on video. Finally, Aspen and the kitty still hates Fudge.

Week 41: Finally, Friday!!

20140621-105551.jpg

Happy Weekend!! I hope you had an awesome and productive week. Excuse the blog silence during the week, it was a long week.

This week was a test-bed(an overused compound word/phrase at work) for running early in the morning, before work. I’ll give it another week or so before I denounce it.

Highlights:

Since we didn’t have the girls for Father’s Day, I got Xavier and I tickets to the first Boulevardia (Beer)Fest at West Bottoms on Sunday. Mistake number one: we should have definitely went on Saturday. Mistake number two: expecting it to be similar to the Houston Wine Fest or the Houston Beer Fest. Also, I missed out on the first PorchFest KC on Saturday, because I am a super procrastinator, and father’s day gift perusing took way longer that I had anticipated.

20140621-105720.jpg

Boulevardia:

We went on Sunday afternoon. It was not as crowded as the previous day, as indicated by Instagram. The down pour in the morning might have impacted this as well, and the fact that it was Father’s Day. I was a little disappointed at the selection of taps and what was available to for tasting on this day. Maybe the participating brewery and distillery did not pack enough for the 3 day festival, I don’t know. But, this event was scheduled for 12-6, and by about 230-3pm, most samples were gone.

We got there around 2pm, as I was sure, this was early enough and more than enough time to taste and stroll. Not. We were able to taste a couple of samples. I tried out an awesome cocktail from Pinckney Bend Distillery, their white corn whiskey collins, and it was great. We didn’t get much in by the way of tasting. The beers on tap were ok.

But the music was pretty good and there was plenty of food trucks lined up. There was an awesome all girl band on the Homegrown Stage, whose name escapes me. I was glad to find out that the festival had plenty of family friendly activities as well. There was also a Makers Market of local artisans. Overall, for a first time event, it was decent, and I will probably go back next year, on a Saturday.

Also, Xavier invited me to go fishing with him and his friends. The last time I went fishing, I hooked my finger pretty bad. This time wasn’t so tragic, and I even caught a fish, though not as big as Xavi’s catches. I can’t remember ever catching a fish as an adult, so it was nice. The fishing spot was really nice and peaceful, and we were so busy enjoying the peace and quiet, that we lost track of time, and Olathe Police had to kick us out of the park. But, it all ended well, lol.

20140621-105504.jpg

20140621-105520.jpg

Finally, we finally got to try out La Bodega. Apparently, it’s the only tapas bar in Kansas City. Is this true? The paella was pretty good, but the sangria was only ok. The Spanish Coffee, with its fancy blazed 151 and cinnamon, was awesome, and not just because it’s a coffee drink.

20140621-105621.jpg

The Girls:

This week the girls were in Dallas. They went to Six Flags and got to spend a day in a farm and feed some cows. Interesting. They were really excited about the cow and were minutes of missing a mama cow give birth. They did get to see a baby cow take its first steps. No cow milking though.

20140621-105605.jpg

Jaelan said now she is a real Cowgirl. This is good practice for when they visit Tita Dora’s place in West Virginia. She has chicken, pigs, and goats.

Aspen is missing home and she keeps asking me when I am going to pick her up. Soon, Terminator, soon.

Also, Aspen’s birthday is coming up, and she is very excited, she can’t wait to turn 3. I can’t believe she is turning 3, already.

Week 40: Finally, Friday!!

20140614-113704.jpg

Happy Father’s Day Weekend! What are y’all doing this weekend? Hope everyone is able to take the time to celebrate dads this weekend or every weekend :). The girls are not here, so we are going to check out the first ever PorchFest KC and the first ever Boulervadia Beer Fest this weekend. Plus it’s the last episode of Game of Thrones, sad face.

Also, it rained cats and dogs for like 6 days in a row this week. That’s crazy.

Highlight:

Nothing much going on over here except work and randomness. Last weekend, Xavier and I checked out the Glass Labyrinth by Robert Morris at the Nelson. He is a local artist. It’s a pretty cool exhibit, and if you decided to go, be careful. We saw 2 kids get hurt running into the glass while trying to get to the middle.

20140614-113855.jpg

20140614-113903.jpg

20140614-113912.jpg

We also checked out a couple of other outdoors exhibits at the Sculpture Park. Pretty solid, but I thought that the headless statues were creepy. And then we checked out Grunauer, an Austrian/German spot rated one of the top 21 beer gardens in the country. I thought the food was ok, didn’t do beer, and the garden was really nice, the awesome weather helped a lot.

20140614-113826.jpg

Quay Coffee had a little show with the band, Joseph, of Portland, OR. They are a talented group of sisters, and the lead can sang. Their genre is different from what I usually listen to, but good music. Gotta venture out sometimes.

Finally, we planted a garden. Yes, planted. a. garden. I am optimistic, but I doubt that it will survive, as the only living organisms that I have been able to grow in life so far, is children. Our first ivy here died, but Xavier brought it back to life. And Poppa told me that it takes a lot to kill an ivy. Also, one of the pepper plants has already been a casualty of our resident Bunny and/or maybe Princeton, Xavier’s pet chipmunk, who lives in one of trees in the back.

The Girls:

20140614-113757.jpg

They are still having too much fun in Texas. So much so, that Jaelan has ignored my requests for summertime photos. She said she will email them to me when she gets home from the park. That was like 5 days ago. She takes after me. So for now here are a couple from Nana Bubu.

20140614-113731.jpg

20140614-113713.jpg

Also, I don’t think Aspen likes Buc-ee. Weird kid. But, her cousin, Devi, loves him ๐Ÿ™‚ SEE:

Week 39: Finally, Friday!!

20140607-105143.jpg

Happy Weekend! What are y’all doing this weekend? We went down to Austin and Houston this past weekend and it was really nice to see friends and family and MY GIRLS!! Aspen was being mean to me and only wanted her dad, but she came around….when he had to go to the bathroom. Whatever, she loves me.

Since the girls are off for the summer, I had envisioned myself being able to do so much around the house, but it’s not the case. Unfortunately, all I have been doing is eating, sleeping, drinking, and repeat. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I need to get on a million of these house work or before I know it, it will be back to school time again!

20140607-102851.jpg

Highlights:

It is very uneventful around here sans children. We went down to Texas to visit. Highlights were family, friends, baby Santana(that’s him down there with Xavier), Noah(that’s him up there smiling at brunch), and the poker game until the sun came up. FYI: Don’t play Poker with the Ogoes, you will lose your money. We tried Ramen Tatsu-ya in Austin and Xavier was mad because he was still hungry.

20140607-102844.jpg

Xavier and I checked out the Summer of Sounds in the Park Concert at Park Place. I am also partaking in Negroni Week, so far I have tried Parisi Coffee’s Cafe Negroni and Julep KC’s Negroni. Still on my list are Barrel 31’s and Snow and Co’s. I was also able to finally check out the Food Truck Rally at First Friday. Xavier had to work, so I dragged a friend along. The lines were uber long so we tried Thai Place on Pennsylvania Ave instead. The food was excellent, but the service was not acceptable, and I will leave it at that. Finally, running has been non-existent this week, just like house work. But I did register for the Aramco Houston Half Marathon lottery. I hope I get picked again!

The Girls

The girls are at their Nana Bubu’s right now(I think), but they spent last weekend with their Tita Paris and Jonathan. Paris reports that they had a blast during their sleepover and it gave her insight into what having 3 kids is like. She said they were very good and even made their beds the next day ๐Ÿ™‚ What!? They don’t do that at home! Xavi got Pokemon cards, Boogie got art supplies, and Terminator got a Team Umizoomi book. They built forts, played lots, ย and ordered Chinese, ย because the girls love Chinese food. We are still trying to work out West Virginia into this summer, I really hope it happens. I want to shoot targets and birds and 4 wheel my afternoons away into the woods. And I want to squeeze in McAfee Knob in there somewhere. I am sure my boss will start giving me the side eye with all of these requests that I am submitting. But it is summertime!

Also, Aspen told her Poppa that Jax ate a bad bone and got sick, so now she needs a new puppy ๐Ÿ˜ฆ More on that later ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

20140607-102818.jpg

20140607-102837.jpg

20140607-102808.jpg

We passed by a drag show at Hamburger Mary’s, but we were too focused on the food trucks, so next time drag show, next time ๐Ÿ™‚

Week 37: Finally, Friday!!

20140524-115347.jpg

Happy Memorial Weekend! I hope everyone enjoy their long weekend with friends and family. Currently wishing I was back home. This week was pretty busy for us, I didn’t get a chance to post anything on the blog. I will have to make up for it this week.

*Also, I am currently attempting to re-design the blog on my own, therefore, until I have achieved a desired design, you might notice a few cosmetic changes. This should not interfere with any of the posts, but in the oft chance that it does, I apologize in advance for the inconvenience.*

Highlights:

Jaelan “graduated” from 6th grade this week. She received the Presidential Academic Award for the second year in a row, so she was very happy. Only a few students receive the award, so we are very proud of her. It capped off a pretty good week for her. She also did well at her end of the year talent show, see video below(excuse the video quality, iphone 4 and distance does not bode well for this task). We will have to work on stage presence and posture. She still gets as stiff as a stick when she gets in front of an audience.

A friend asked Xavier to fill in for a league flag football game this past weekend and he had a blast. It’s been a while, but he did pretty well, he had 3 touchdowns! He might have to become a regular. While he played, we also got to catch a cricket game at the park, and that is one interesting sport. I know nothing about it, but I love sports, so I might have to read up on it and at least learn how they score.

20140524-115445.jpg

The big girls’ last week of school was this week, and they officially left us for grandma’s yesterday ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I miss them already ๐Ÿ˜ฆ But I know that they will have a great time with family down in Texas this summer. We took a long drive to Tulsa to meet up with Mimi, and I got a chance to check out Chimera, before we headed back home, because you know, coffee.

20140524-115332.jpg

Aspen:

Aspen has been telling me that she is excited to be going to Mimi’s house all week. I told her I was going to miss her, see her response in our conversation below.

Also, ever since she asked us to read her this book called, My Blankie, she has been infatuated with various blankets and scarves, and won’t go anywhere without one, as evidenced by the photos above. Photo on the left, with a blanket at Jaelan’s talent show and her, “no pictures!!” face. The photo on the right, with a scarf at Jaelan’s 6th grade ceremony.

20140524-125024.jpg

Oh, and she is trying to learn how to tie her shoe laces. She shows great initiative, in a hard headed, I want to do it myself, and hold up everyone’s time, kind of way, when she wants to accomplish something. I know this will be a great quality in the distant future. I mean look at that fierce face of concentration!

Me: Aspen, do you want to stay here with daddy and I?

Aspen: I am very excited to go to Mimi’s house. But, I will miss you, Mama.

Me: So, you don’t want to stay her with me? Well, I am going to miss you a lot.

Aspen: I am going to miss you too, I said, but I want to go to Mimi’s. I am ready to go to Mimi’s now, Mama.
