Hello February!!

20150202-010229.jpg

Happy February!! Finally, a post for 2015 πŸ™‚ (And hopefully more to come). It helps when you are snowed in or it’s just too cold to get out 😦 Also, Jaelan will become a teenager this month :(…So, we will have a teen, tween, and toddler.

20150202-010148.jpg

January pretty much breezed by, I am still looking for it, and February started out with a flurry…of snow. Anyways, I hope everyone’s 2015 has been going well so far. I definitely hope to post more than I have been lately. It was a busy/rocky December and January. Also, the second Pitch Bite Club post will be up, soon, I hope.

Highlights:

Jaelan started playing league basketball this season, her first. I am happy to report that she is doing better than expected. She has a knack for the game, and has picked it up pretty quickly. She is one of a few girls who has never played before. Xavier has been practicing and working with her, and that has helped a lot, because he has way more patience than I do. Plus she likes to give me attitude. Pfft!

Aspen left us this past week to go hang out with Mimi and party down in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, lucky kid. Hopefully ,she will send us pictures of the parades and other activities. I am sure she will be all over the place down there.

20150202-010523.jpg

Xavi got a bunch of Pokemon games and an ipad mini for Christmas, so she has been buried in electronics ever since. We practically have to pry her off of it every night.

20150202-010222.jpg

Well, that is it for now. There are some new(big) changes happening in the next few weeks/months. Hopefully we can share them on here soon. Cross your fingers and toes.

Have a great Monday and a productive week!!

Week 50: Finally, Friday!!

20140901-110705.jpg

Happy Labor Day! I hope everyone is enjoying their time off from work! Who is bbq-ing today!? The weather here is clearing up, hopefully, just in time for backyard BBQ and drinks. Also, I am not sure if this series will continue after the one year post, which is only 2 weeks away. A weekly post can get a little redundant, maybe we will switch over to a monthly recap instead, we will see where it goes.

Highlights:

20140901-105959.jpg

20140901-105951.jpg

Since I missed quite a few weeks of recap, I will include a few highlights: We have had a pretty busy summer, maybe one too many trips to Houston. Aspen and Xavier celebrated birthdays in June and July, and there was a wedding in the family. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Day!!

The girls started school about 2 weeks ago, a week earlier than Texas. Jaelan is now in 7th grade and in middle school, and Xavi is in 5th grade. Jaelan was really excited about getting a locker, she didn’t even care about school supplies, she just wanted locker decorations. Tweens.

20140901-110056.jpg

Also, Jaelan went to her first ever middle school dance this past Friday. Didn’t school just start? She said that some boy asked her to go to the dance, but she turned him down, and he moved on to the next girl. *Pause* Life needs to chill, like for real.

Jaelan will continue with choir because she loves it and, Xavi has joined the strings at school. Goodness gracious. I hope she likes the basement because that is where she will be practicing! Just kidding. I think it’s great that she wants to learn how to play the violin.

This past week, the girls started their fall sports activities. Jaelan is doing cross country, I’m not yet sure if she knows what that means. But we told her that it’s not one mile, not three miles, but lots and lots of miles. Her first track meet is on the 6th. Xavi is doing soccer, this week was her first week of practice, her first game is on the 6th.Β Jaelan is getting used running long distances, she is always pooped and hungry when she comes home. We are gonna have to get her more acquainted with a high carb diet. Xavi is getting used to big girl soccer. So, drills and fundamentals. She is playing for an U11 team, and yes, she is the smallest kid on the team. The coach loves her energy, she doesn’t seem to get tired, lol. But, she has taken a long break from soccer, so she needs to brush up on her skills.

Aspen:

Aspen started back at day care last week because our schedule is just too crazy to stay with her at home. So, there was a lot of meltdown and tears. She gets all excited and ready to go. But, when we get there to drop her off, she just loses it. One day, the teacher had to pry her off of me, because she was holding on really tight. Poor kid. This too shall pass.

Week 44: Finally, Friday!!

20140713-234800.jpg

Happy end of the weekend! Here is late Friday post. I hope you had a great weekend. Congratulations to Germany for winning the World Cup, as I had predicted(on my bracket). But, the Rockets are not having a good week in the free agency world. So, hopefully the coming weeks will be better. I really, really, really doubt that Trevor Ariza will make a significant (or any) difference for us. So, find someone else, anyone else.

Highlights:

20140713-234426.jpg

It was a pretty uneventful week. We beat the heat this week, by going to a friend’s pool. This month, we are having Summer Games at work. I played in the Dodge Ball tournament. We won one and lost one. The winners were insane, I would have lost a limb as hard as they were throwing those soft ass balls. This week, I am doing the Free Throw contest, wish me luck. And Xavier and I finally got to check out Barrel 31. They have a great Happy Hour.

20140713-234753.jpg

Xavier took us to a huge park last weekend. I can say this about Kansas: They know how to do parks. Shawnee Mission Park is huge and full of activities.

20140713-234519.jpg

Aspen received a kite for her birthday, and she has been wanting to fly it, so we decided to have a picnic and fly kites at Shawnee Mission last weekend. I do not remember kite flying being so difficult when I was younger. I mean it took me, 3 tries of maybe 30 minutes at a time of running around trying to get that thing up. My kite flying arm(left) was sore the next day. But, I HAD TO get that kite to fly.

20140713-234743.jpg

20140713-234502.jpg

Xavi, Aspen, and I took turns trying to fly that thing, while Xavier and Jaelan laughed and pointed at us. They said I lied about knowing how to fly a kite. But, it turns out, I had the strings wrong, Xavi figured it out, and the stupid kite finally got up in the air. I said I knew how to FLY a kite, not how to CONSTRUCT one. But it finally flew, and Aspen was SO SO uber excited. And so I was happy.

20140713-234453.jpg

Aspen:

20140713-234435.jpg

While we were at a coffee shop last week, she scratched open a mosquito bite. We didn’t have any band-aids on hand, so she suggested we do this instead:

20140713-234815.jpg

And then she wanted to smell the flowers:

20140713-234840.jpg

Also, she loves her Doc McStuffins doctor set that she received for her birthday, and she loves to take your blood pressure, on your leg:

20140713-234418.jpg

Aspen is obsessed with Frozen. She watches it several times a day. She sometimes refers to herself as Anna. When one of her sisters are being mean to her, she tells us that Elsa is being mean. Also, she now offers kisses called, A True Love’s Kiss. She will caress your face from the forehead to your chin, then lift your chin up to her face, and give you a kiss. It is the cutest thing ever. I will try to get it on video. Finally, Aspen and the kitty still hates Fudge.

Week 42 & 43: Finally, Friday!!

20140705-105647.jpg

Happy 4th of July Weekend! I hope everyone enjoyed the USA celebration with their family and friends. I took a little blogging break, though not intentionally. I think that has been my longest drought, hopefully it won’t happen again. Last week was crazy busy and this week, the girls are back, YAY!!

20140705-105426.jpg

20140705-105433.jpg

20140705-105417.jpg

Highlights:

We went down to Houston last weekend to pick up the girls(they were ready to come home they said), celebrate Aspen’s 3rd birthday with family, and spend some time with my sister, DJ, who lives in West Virginia, and who rarely get to come home. So, everyone was home for the 4th of July. We took the girls to a water park, and the sun drained the life out of Aspen and I, then we grilled out back with friends, and watched fireworks across the street from our house. No traffic and no hassles. It was a lovely day.

20140705-105337.jpg

20140705-105557.jpg

The Big Girls:

20140705-105441.jpg

I am surprised that the girls were ready to come back home, since summer break is only half-way over! I think they wanted to come back home so that they can make sure we don’t visit Tita Dora without them. But still, I am happy that they are back. Now I have my dishwasher, dog-walker, and babysitter back! πŸ™‚ Just kidding.

20140705-105605.jpg

Aspen:

Aspen turned 3 last week and she was so excited. But her party got rained out, so it was a complete disaster, in the eyes of me, but she didn’t even notice because she got her birthday song, cake, and her presents. We did get to take her and her sisters to Jollibee, for the first time ever, which is a Filipino must. The food was good, but it was not as festive as I previously remembered from a hundred years ago, when I last visited, as a teenager 😦

20140705-105533.jpg

20140705-105410.jpg

Here is Aspen’s latest try at, “Let it Go!”

Week 41: Finally, Friday!!

20140621-105551.jpg

Happy Weekend!! I hope you had an awesome and productive week. Excuse the blog silence during the week, it was a long week.

This week was a test-bed(an overused compound word/phrase at work) for running early in the morning, before work. I’ll give it another week or so before I denounce it.

Highlights:

Since we didn’t have the girls for Father’s Day, I got Xavier and I tickets to the first Boulevardia (Beer)Fest at West Bottoms on Sunday. Mistake number one: we should have definitely went on Saturday. Mistake number two: expecting it to be similar to the Houston Wine Fest or the Houston Beer Fest. Also, I missed out on the first PorchFest KC on Saturday, because I am a super procrastinator, and father’s day gift perusing took way longer that I had anticipated.

20140621-105720.jpg

Boulevardia:

We went on Sunday afternoon. It was not as crowded as the previous day, as indicated by Instagram. The down pour in the morning might have impacted this as well, and the fact that it was Father’s Day. I was a little disappointed at the selection of taps and what was available to for tasting on this day. Maybe the participating brewery and distillery did not pack enough for the 3 day festival, I don’t know. But, this event was scheduled for 12-6, and by about 230-3pm, most samples were gone.

We got there around 2pm, as I was sure, this was early enough and more than enough time to taste and stroll. Not. We were able to taste a couple of samples. I tried out an awesome cocktail from Pinckney Bend Distillery, their white corn whiskey collins, and it was great. We didn’t get much in by the way of tasting. The beers on tap were ok.

But the music was pretty good and there was plenty of food trucks lined up. There was an awesome all girl band on the Homegrown Stage, whose name escapes me. I was glad to find out that the festival had plenty of family friendly activities as well. There was also a Makers Market of local artisans. Overall, for a first time event, it was decent, and I will probably go back next year, on a Saturday.

Also, Xavier invited me to go fishing with him and his friends. The last time I went fishing, I hooked my finger pretty bad. This time wasn’t so tragic, and I even caught a fish, though not as big as Xavi’s catches. I can’t remember ever catching a fish as an adult, so it was nice. The fishing spot was really nice and peaceful, and we were so busy enjoying the peace and quiet, that we lost track of time, and Olathe Police had to kick us out of the park. But, it all ended well, lol.

20140621-105504.jpg

20140621-105520.jpg

Finally, we finally got to try out La Bodega. Apparently, it’s the only tapas bar in Kansas City. Is this true? The paella was pretty good, but the sangria was only ok. The Spanish Coffee, with its fancy blazed 151 and cinnamon, was awesome, and not just because it’s a coffee drink.

20140621-105621.jpg

The Girls:

This week the girls were in Dallas. They went to Six Flags and got to spend a day in a farm and feed some cows. Interesting. They were really excited about the cow and were minutes of missing a mama cow give birth. They did get to see a baby cow take its first steps. No cow milking though.

20140621-105605.jpg

Jaelan said now she is a real Cowgirl. This is good practice for when they visit Tita Dora’s place in West Virginia. She has chicken, pigs, and goats.

Aspen is missing home and she keeps asking me when I am going to pick her up. Soon, Terminator, soon.

Also, Aspen’s birthday is coming up, and she is very excited, she can’t wait to turn 3. I can’t believe she is turning 3, already.

Week 39: Finally, Friday!!

20140607-105143.jpg

Happy Weekend! What are y’all doing this weekend? We went down to Austin and Houston this past weekend and it was really nice to see friends and family and MY GIRLS!! Aspen was being mean to me and only wanted her dad, but she came around….when he had to go to the bathroom. Whatever, she loves me.

Since the girls are off for the summer, I had envisioned myself being able to do so much around the house, but it’s not the case. Unfortunately, all I have been doing is eating, sleeping, drinking, and repeat. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I need to get on a million of these house work or before I know it, it will be back to school time again!

20140607-102851.jpg

Highlights:

It is very uneventful around here sans children. We went down to Texas to visit. Highlights were family, friends, baby Santana(that’s him down there with Xavier), Noah(that’s him up there smiling at brunch), and the poker game until the sun came up. FYI: Don’t play Poker with the Ogoes, you will lose your money. We tried Ramen Tatsu-ya in Austin and Xavier was mad because he was still hungry.

20140607-102844.jpg

Xavier and I checked out the Summer of Sounds in the Park Concert at Park Place. I am also partaking in Negroni Week, so far I have tried Parisi Coffee’s Cafe Negroni and Julep KC’s Negroni. Still on my list are Barrel 31’s and Snow and Co’s. I was also able to finally check out the Food Truck Rally at First Friday. Xavier had to work, so I dragged a friend along. The lines were uber long so we tried Thai Place on Pennsylvania Ave instead. The food was excellent, but the service was not acceptable, and I will leave it at that. Finally, running has been non-existent this week, just like house work. But I did register for the Aramco Houston Half Marathon lottery. I hope I get picked again!

The Girls

The girls are at their Nana Bubu’s right now(I think), but they spent last weekend with their Tita Paris and Jonathan. Paris reports that they had a blast during their sleepover and it gave her insight into what having 3 kids is like. She said they were very good and even made their beds the next day πŸ™‚ What!? They don’t do that at home! Xavi got Pokemon cards, Boogie got art supplies, and Terminator got a Team Umizoomi book. They built forts, played lots, Β and ordered Chinese, Β because the girls love Chinese food. We are still trying to work out West Virginia into this summer, I really hope it happens. I want to shoot targets and birds and 4 wheel my afternoons away into the woods. And I want to squeeze in McAfee Knob in there somewhere. I am sure my boss will start giving me the side eye with all of these requests that I am submitting. But it is summertime!

Also, Aspen told her Poppa that Jax ate a bad bone and got sick, so now she needs a new puppy 😦 More on that later 😦

20140607-102818.jpg

20140607-102837.jpg

20140607-102808.jpg

We passed by a drag show at Hamburger Mary’s, but we were too focused on the food trucks, so next time drag show, next time πŸ™‚

Week 38: Finally, Friday!!

20140531-135029-49829201.jpg

Happy weekend!! The short week was really nice, but busy, as usual.

But, I miss the girls 😦 The house is very quiet and I have no one to order around! Just kidding.

I try not to call (too much or at all) because they are too busy having fun without their parents, but it’s ok, I understand πŸ™‚

Highlights:

Well since the girls are away, this department will be pretty limited. Besides the holiday, catching an Astros/Royals game at the K was pretty nice. The ‘Stros won and swept the Royals, so that is always awesome. I like the Springer kid, he is playing pretty well during the winning streak, which is a welcomed change.

Kauffman Stadium is pretty nice, plus the weather was great, which is always plus for an open stadium. It is also one of the easiest stadiums to maneuver around and find parking at, for me anyways. It’s smaller than Minute Maid, but looks bigger than Wrigley. The crowd was calm and I did see a couple of other Astros fans.

20140531-135029-49829363.jpg

20140531-135029-49829035.jpg

Big Girls:

Jaelan is pretty excited about being able to visit her friends in Houston and that is pretty much all she calls to talk about. And Xavi is still Xavi, but with a really nice tan from all of the swimming that they are doing.

Aspen:

Aspen called me this week and told me that she is ready to come home, but I’m sure she was just being nice. I know she is having a great time with her Mimi and Poppa.

Also, her birthday is coming up and it looks like it will be a Texas celebration.

20140531-135028-49828856.jpg

Week 37: Finally, Friday!!

20140524-115347.jpg

Happy Memorial Weekend! I hope everyone enjoy their long weekend with friends and family. Currently wishing I was back home. This week was pretty busy for us, I didn’t get a chance to post anything on the blog. I will have to make up for it this week.

*Also, I am currently attempting to re-design the blog on my own, therefore, until I have achieved a desired design, you might notice a few cosmetic changes. This should not interfere with any of the posts, but in the oft chance that it does, I apologize in advance for the inconvenience.*

Highlights:

Jaelan “graduated” from 6th grade this week. She received the Presidential Academic Award for the second year in a row, so she was very happy. Only a few students receive the award, so we are very proud of her. It capped off a pretty good week for her. She also did well at her end of the year talent show, see video below(excuse the video quality, iphone 4 and distance does not bode well for this task). We will have to work on stage presence and posture. She still gets as stiff as a stick when she gets in front of an audience.

A friend asked Xavier to fill in for a league flag football game this past weekend and he had a blast. It’s been a while, but he did pretty well, he had 3 touchdowns! He might have to become a regular. While he played, we also got to catch a cricket game at the park, and that is one interesting sport. I know nothing about it, but I love sports, so I might have to read up on it and at least learn how they score.

20140524-115445.jpg

The big girls’ last week of school was this week, and they officially left us for grandma’s yesterday 😦 I miss them already 😦 But I know that they will have a great time with family down in Texas this summer. We took a long drive to Tulsa to meet up with Mimi, and I got a chance to check out Chimera, before we headed back home, because you know, coffee.

20140524-115332.jpg

Aspen:

Aspen has been telling me that she is excited to be going to Mimi’s house all week. I told her I was going to miss her, see her response in our conversation below.

Also, ever since she asked us to read her this book called, My Blankie, she has been infatuated with various blankets and scarves, and won’t go anywhere without one, as evidenced by the photos above. Photo on the left, with a blanket at Jaelan’s talent show and her, “no pictures!!” face. The photo on the right, with a scarf at Jaelan’s 6th grade ceremony.

20140524-125024.jpg

Oh, and she is trying to learn how to tie her shoe laces. She shows great initiative, in a hard headed, I want to do it myself, and hold up everyone’s time, kind of way, when she wants to accomplish something. I know this will be a great quality in the distant future. I mean look at that fierce face of concentration!

Me: Aspen, do you want to stay here with daddy and I?

Aspen: I am very excited to go to Mimi’s house. But, I will miss you, Mama.

Me: So, you don’t want to stay her with me? Well, I am going to miss you a lot.

Aspen: I am going to miss you too, I said, but I want to go to Mimi’s. I am ready to go to Mimi’s now, Mama.

Week 36: Finally, Friday!!

Happy weekend!! Another week bites the dust. Also, it’s May and it was in the 40s all week, why?

Highlights:

I figured out what Jaelan is singing at the year end talent show, it’s the number one song in the world. The show is this coming Wednesday, so wish her luck!

Xavi got her glasses this week and she looks so cute. She is still trying to get used to them. It was kind of cool to see her reaction once she put them on. Her first comment:

“Mom, everything looks like HD and 3-D! Those are leaves!!” *Points at a picture across the room*

Then it dawned on me how bad she needed glasses and it made me kind of sad. I gave her bad eyes, even though I don’t wear glasses 😦 And I’m a bad parent for waiting so long to get her glasses 😦 I did not realize how bad her eyes are.

She did have a moment of panic. She was scared that the television looks blurry when she takes her glasses off. I explained to her that, her eyes are adjusting, and that now she knows how clear vision looks with the glasses on.

Now, the next challenge is to teach her how to take care of her glasses. We got her 2 pairs, let’s see how long they last πŸ™‚

Aspen:

Of course once Aspen saw Xavi’s glasses, she quickly let us know that she can’t see, and that she too needs some eyeglasses, so she can see.

Her new phrase this week:

Aspen: Can I have a fruit snack?

Me: No, you already had 2 packs!

Aspen: “That doesn’t make sense!”

Week 35: Finally, Friday!!

20140511-110145.jpg

Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! Here is a late Friday post.

Highlights:

Last weekend, we went to the Brookside Art Annual and also checked out a couple of places we have been meaning to visit, Foo’s Frozen Custard and the Reading Reptile. The girls loved the Reading Reptile, it’s now the coolest bookstore ever, said Xavi. More on this place later. And then we decided to have a random Cinco de Mayo BBQ at the park with friends.

20140511-110107.jpg

20140511-110235.jpg

*Apparently there is not a flavor that they do not have at Foo’s.*

The big girls are gearing up for end of school year activities such as finals testing and field day. This year went by so fast, I can’t believe that the school year is over in two weeks. Xavi finally finished make-up testing and she is too relieved.

I went to the girls’ Book Fair with them at school because some kids were stealing books, so parental supervision was required. Kids stealing book. Really. They were having a buy one, get one free sale and apparently it was a must.

20140511-110317.jpg

Xavi has picked up her reading time quite a bit, maybe she is prepping for when she get her eye glasses. She tells me that she likes fantasy and magic books a lot. She was too excited when we picked out her eyeglasses this week and she couldn’t understand why she had to wait 2 weeks to take them home.

Aspen:

Aspen has a new phrase that is gonna get her in trouble more often than not: “I was talking to Daddy not you Mommy”….Excuse me?

She uses this phrase a lot when she wants something and I or someone else tells her no.

Also, she told me that she is going to be Aspen the First like Sophia the First. So she said that she will need a pink crown with a pink dress with pink stripes. Eww and Gross, says me. Pink. I told her, her dad will make it happen.

20140511-110333.jpg

20140511-110325.jpg

Her birthday is slowly creeping up, so I have started asking her what she wants for her birthday party and these seem to be the constant requests: A pink Bubble Guppies pinata and pink balloons and pink cake and Lightning McQueen and Frozen and Woody plates….? And a plate for Bambi(her current favorite stuffed animal deer)

I will have to narrow it down later.
